Mary GORDON

(1905 - )
Mary GORDON was born on 24 March 1905.1

She married Robert Doig BROWN, son of William BROWN and Christina Nowell (Tina) McINNES, between 1939 and 1942. This marriage may possibly have taken place in Malaya.

After working as a VAD at No.1 Base Hospital, Johore, she was evacuated from Singapore to Perth ahead of the arrival of the Japanese. Passenger lists for ships arriving in Fremantle are somewhat suspect in this period, unsurprisingly, but she appears to have arrived on one of the Charon's voyages, either on 18 January 1942 or 26 Feb 1942.

This agrees with the recollections of Alexander FERGUSON who claimed to have met her in Sydney in 1942. He also claimed she was from Dunedin, was part of a family of 5, and that her father was involved with tin mining in Malaya. Certainly there were two John GORDONs (possibly her father and brother), both engineers from New Zealand, interned at Changi Jail in Singapore during WWII.2,3,4,5

Mary and her husband Robert returned to the UK after the war on the Aquitania, arriving in Southhampton on 10 January 1946, having left from Sydney. It is not clear how he managed to get from Singapore to Sydney after the war, but we presume Mary was living in Sydney from 1942 until 1946. He once again described himself as a rubber planter.6

She left Liverpool on 25 June 1946 on the Mauretania, bound for Singapore to join her husband, who had left the UK for Malaya two months earlier.7

Mary and her husband Robert left London on the the Strathmore on 8 March 1955, bound for Melbourne. They were living at Lochcarron, where he was farming, and returned to London on 26 Jun 1955 on the Oronsay.7,6
