Jane Ashwell was born in Scotland in January 1816.2

She arrived in New York on 24 Sep 1838, having sailed from Liverpool on the Elisha Dennison (359 tons), and was travelling alone.3

She married Thomas Moodie, son of Thomas Mudie and Mary Gordon Nicoll, in West Union, Ohio, on 6 November 1838. After the marriage they moved briefly to Cincinnati before settling in Columbus, Ohio in 1840.4

She was listed in the 1850 US census in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio, with her husband Thomas; he gave his occupation as 'banker' and their house was valued at $7000. Their children Euphemia, Mary, Jeannie, Thomas, Frances and Margaret were listed as living with them, as were two servants and Jane's parents Thomas Ashwell and Euphemia Abernethy.1

She was listed in the 1860 US census in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio, with her husband Thomas; his occupation and the value of the house were not recorded, but a male clerk and female servant were living with the family, as were Isabella Moodie and Gordon Moodie (Thomas's niece and nephew respectively). Their children Euphemia, Jeannie, Frances and Florence were listed as living with them.5

She was widowed at age 48 on the death of her husband Thomas on 1 July 1864.2

She was listed in the 1870 US census in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio; the house had a value of only $600, implying the family were no longer living in the original Moodie house The household included her niece Isabella Moodie but no servants were listed. Her children Jeannie and Florence were listed as living with her.6

Jane died on 15 September 1890 in Ohio at age 74.2 She was buried at the Green Lawn Cemetery in Columbus.2
