Richard MATTHEWS was born in 1811 in Deddington, Oxfordshire.1

He arrived in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand, aboard HMS Beagle on 21st December 1835, with Captain Robert FitzRoy (later Governor of NZ) and Charles Darwin. These three spent Christmas Day 1835 at the Waimate Mission Station with the Rev. William Williams and George Clarke. His older brother Joseph Matthews had already arrived in NZ on 26 Mar 1832, but his eldest brother Robert remained in England. The HMS Beagle left London in 27th Dec 1831 and returned on 2nd Oct 1836 after sailing around the world from East to West.

He established the Wanganui Mission in 1840.1

He married Johanna Sarah BLOMFIELD in Waimate North, Northland, on 14 March 1838, the marriage performed by the Rev. William Williams.1,2

He died on 27 January 1893 in Kaitaia, Northland.1,3 He was buried at the St Saviours Church Cemetery in Kaitaia.4

Ronald James MATTHEWS

Ronald J MATTHEWS (1924-2000) on wedding day 1948
Ronald James MATTHEWS was born in Brisbane, Queensland, on 23 September 1924. He was the second son of James Alexander MATTHEWS (1898-1963) and Stella Evelyn ABELL (1900-1991).1

He was a apprentice fitter and turner at the glassworks before enlisting in the Australian Army, where he attained the rank of Lieutenant at retirement. He later became the Safety Officer at Comalco before a series of strokes forced his retirement.1

Ronald died on 6 July 2000 at home in Moorebank, Sydney, New South Wales, at age 75.2,1 He was buried on 11 July 2000 at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Leppington.1

He married Elizabeth Eleanor SUBRITZKY, daughter of Johannes Anton SUBRITZKY and Elizabeth HOARE, in New Zealand in 1875.3,4

Samuel died on 14 April 1888 in Kaitaia, Northland, as the result of a farming accident.5 He was buried at the St Saviours Church Cemetery in Kaitaia.5
