James (Hamish) McINNES1

(1894 - 1916)
Father*Charles McINNES1 b. 1848, d. 1918
Mother*Margaret McCOLL1 b. 1852, d. 1909
James (Hamish) McINNES was born at 54 Williams St in Anderston, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, on 5 June 1894.1
The siblings Jane, Christina, Catherine, Jessie, Margaret, Marion, Angus, Dugald, John and James were listed in the 1901 census at 54 William St, Anderston in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, with their parents, Charles McINNES and Margaret McCOLL.2
The siblings Christina, Catherine, Marion, Dugald, John and James were listed in the 1911 census at 848 Argyle St in Anderston, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, with their father Charles McINNES. Hamish was an insurance clerk.3

He enlisted in the 11th Battalion, Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment) (#16780) on 4 January 1915 at Glasgow, Lanarkshire. Family oral history states he enlisted while under-age as he was given a white feather in the street (due to his large frame), but in fact he was of an age - possibly the white feather story is still true though; he was working as a tram conductor when he enlisted, which was a protected occupation.4,5,6 He was wounded on 25 September 1915 at France and after recovery, returned to France 2 Feb 1916, rejoining his battalion on the 17th.4,5

James died on 1 July 1916 at Casualty Clearing Station #39 in St. Ouen, Somme, at age 22 after the family had been advised by telegram on 1 July that he was 'dangerously ill, with cerebral spinal meningitis' (possibly from an infected head wound). Despite the family attempts to get his brother-in-law Alexander Ferguson (then a Sergeant with the 15th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry) to visit him, he died prior to permission being given - if indeed it would have been allowed.7,4,5 He was buried at the St. Ouen Communal Cemetery in St. Ouen.8

He married Janet LEITCH in Argyllshire circa 1813. Although the death record for their son Angus claims John married a Janet LEITCH, this is suspect - the only likely OPR record is the marriage of a John MCINNES and Janet BEATON on 9 Feb 1813 in the parish of Kilninian & Kilmore (GROS 544/00 0010 0154).2
