Gordon MOODIE was born in Alloa, Clackmannanshire, on 26 September 1838. On his death certificate his daughter Alice (informant) claimed his parents were David MOODIE and Mary YOUNG, but there are no Scottish records for such a union. Family folklore also claims that he was the illegitmate son of David MOODIE.2,3,1
He was listed as a member of Thomas MUDIE's household in the 1841 census in Alloa, Clackmannanshire.4
He was listed as the grand-son of Mary Gordon NICOLL in the 1851 Census in Alloa, Clackmannanshire.5

He was listed in the 1870 US census in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio, with his wife Sarah; there were two domestic servants in the household and he gave his occupation as Secretary, P O & S & L R R (although notices in the New York Times for 1869-1880 identify him as Secretary of the Columbus, Chicago & Indiana Central Railway Company (CCICRCo)). Their children Grace and Alice were listed as living with them.9
He was listed in the 1880 US census, lodging at The Arno Hotel, Broadway in Manhattan, New York; he was the Secretary of a Railroad Co. He claimed his house was valued at $5500, with a personal estate of $1000 and two servants in the household.10

He was listed in the 1900 US census as head of the family at 1056 Oak St in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio, with his wife Sarah; no occupation was given for Gordon and the family were living in a rented house. Their child Grace was listed as living with them, as was Sarah's brother Ralph O SMITH.11

Their child Grace was listed as living with them, and the household included Sarah's brothers Ralph and Josiah, plus Emily M SMITH (daughter-in-law) and Alison SMITH (niece), whose full family relationships are unclear.12
