David MOODIE1

(1817 - 1855)
Father*Thomas MUDIE b. c 1776, d. b 1851
Mother*Mary Gordon NICOLL b. 1784, d. 1863
David MOODIE was born in Kilconquhar, Fife, on 10 August 1817.2,3 and was baptised on 28 August 1817 in Carnbee.4

He had a brief liaison with Mary YOUNG in January 1838 at Clackmannanshire.5,6

In his application for a Master's Certificate on 18 February 1849, he listed his past appointments as master of the Vanstead of London (Feb-Aug 1843), Iateur (sp?) of Portsmouth (Apr-May 1847), Britannia of London (Apr 1844-Dec 1845), Mary Jane of Sunderland (Aug 1847-Aug 1848) and Senegal of Sunderland (Aug 1848 to present). His Board of Trade Master's Certificate (#2311) was issued on 17 Jul 1851 and exchanged in Sunderland on the 23 July for the 1st Class certificate issued at Leith on 27 Feb 1850.7

According to family lore, he brought back a small bell from India, known as an 'Apostle Bell'. As this was passed down through the family and eventually ended up in New Zealand, it is possible it was a gift to his sister-in-law Janet.8

Marriage banns for David and Margaret Thomson LIDDELL were published on 12 February 1853 in Alloa, Clackmannanshire.9

He married Margaret Thomson LIDDELL, daughter of John LIDDELL and Marion HENDERSON, in Alloa, Clackmannanshire, on 14 February 1853.9,10

The ship Calabar, under Moodie's command, left Southampton 4 May 1853 and arrived Port Adelaide, Sth Australia on the 1 Aug 1853. Mrs Moodie is recorded as 'Master's wife' (although she appears, somewhat strangely, in the 'Single Women' list).
The Calabar then sailed for India, arriving on 9 Nov 1853, just in time for the birth of their son.11,12

The Calabar returned to India, arriving 19 February 1855 from Melbourne, then left for London on Apr 15.13

He signed a will dated 17 March 1855 in Calcutta, Bengal, probably made on board the Calabar as it was witnessed by other officers.14

David died on 20 March 1855 in Calcutta, Bengal, at age 37.15,16 He was buried on 20 March 1855 at the Scottish Cemetery, Karaya Rd in Calcutta.17

His will was probated at the Perogative Court of Canterbury on 26 July 1855 and although the 'will' was of a somewhat non-standard nature, the court accepted its existence and the intent that Margaret was the sole heir.14
