Norman WICKS (1923-1999) c1941
Norman WICKS was born in Edmonton, Middlesex, on 8 January 1923.

He joined up in about 1941 and by May 1944 was Acting Sub-Lieutenant (Air Engineering) in the RNVR. After training at the HMS Kestrel shore base he joined the small escort carrier HMS Chaser (Jan 1945) to deliver aircraft to the Royal Navy Pacific Fleet. He was then transferred to HMS Indomitable, where he witnessed the kamikaze attacks on her in May 1945 and the relief of Hong Kong in Sep 1945, until being demobbed in Apr 1946.1

When HMS Indomitable was part of the force accepting the Japanese surrender of Hong Kong in September 1945, he managed to find his relations (Eric William SHARP, Peggy Christine SHARP, Robert John MINNITT CMG and Annie (---?---)) amongst the internees, and invited them aboard for a meal. As Robert had no shoes at the time, he gave him a Navy issue pair to wear.2

Norman died on 22 July 1999 in Harlow, Essex, at age 76. He was cremated. His ashes were buried in Torteval.

Percival Bernard Weston WICKS1

(1886 - 1954)
Father*William Augustus WICKS1 b. 1849, d. 1899
Mother*Sarah Ann HOLMAN1 b. 1851, d. 1931
Percival's birth was registered between October 1886 and December 1886 in Isle of Wight, Hampshire.1 Percy renamed himself to Percy Bernard WESTON (sometimes WICKS WESTON) at some time before the 1911 census (where he is listed as WESTON). He married using this name, but it is interesting that his probate record identifies all the variations. Quite why he did this is unclear, but see also the similar actions of his uncle Sidney Buckingham WICKS, in New Zealand.2
He was listed as a lodger in Barbara Jane FROST's household in the 1911 Census at 98 Pollock St in Govan, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, under the name of Percival WESTON. He was an engineer fitter, and claimed to be 29 years old, rather than the correct 24. This made him closer in age to his landlady, who he would shortly marry.3

He married Barbara Jane FROST at 102 West Nile St in Blythswood, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, on 29 June 1911. The marriage entry is significant in that Percy claims his surname is WESTON (and therefore his father's surname was WESTON, rather than WICKS). Both parties lied about their age - Percy claiming to be 29 (actually 24) and Barbara also 29 (actually 38!).2

He was appointed administrator of Sarah Ann HOLMAN's estate in London on 24 August 1934.4

He died on 13 August 1954 in Elie, Fife.5

Sidney Buckingham WICKS1

(1851 - 1915)
Father*William Poulter WICKS1 b. c 1807, d. 1859
Mother*Sarah Elizabeth BUCKINGHAM1 b. c 1822, d. 1893
Sidney Buckingham WICKS (or George WESTON)(1851-1915)
Sidney Buckingham WICKS was born in Landport, Hampshire, on 1 April 1851.2,3,1 and was baptised on 4 September 1853 at St Marys in Portsea.4
He was listed as the nephew of Purton WESTON in the 1861 Census at 20 Queen Sq in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.2

He enlisted in the Royal Navy, as Boy 2nd class (height 4' 9", hair dark, eyes blue) on 8 November 1865 at Portsmouth, Hampshire. He volunteered for service on the 8 Nov 1865 at HMS Excellent (a stone frigate), but did not commence his ten year continuous service engagement until 1 April 1869.5

Sidney Buckingham WICKS was also known as George WESTON although there is much confusion surrounding the use of these two names and how or why Sidney became George. We have recorded here the known registration of the birth of the children (as 'WICKS') but all of them attended school as 'WESTON' and all except two also lived and married as 'WESTON'. There is also no record of a Sidney WICK's life in New Zealand, plus all the evidence suggests he lived as a WESTON in the Te Puke area as a general contractor and carrier and was buried as George WESTON, along with his wife Harriet.6

The 'Auckland Star' of July-Aug 1870 records the remand (from Tauranga to Auckland) of one George Weston, pleading guilty to being a deserter from HMS Rosario, and subsequently being remanded further until one of Her Majesty's ships appeared. Due to the continued lack of such a ship he was further remanded on the 29th of July and the 5th of August, but after that there is no further mention of him.
It is unclear if this is the 'real' George Weston (who was a contemporary RN seaman), or Sidney Wicks claiming to be George Weston.7

He married Harriet TIPPETT in Waiuku on 16 June 1881.8

Sidney described himself as 'pilot boatman' on his son's birth certificate in 1885.9

He died on 13 November 1915 in Te Puke, Bay of Plenty, at age 64.10,6 He was buried at the Te Puke Old Cemetery in Te Puke.10
