Maurice Edward COXHEAD (1889-1917)
Maurice Edward COXHEAD was born in Kensington, London, Middlesex, on 24 May 1889, the son of Frederick Charles COXHEAD and Amy Bruce GRIBBLE.1,2

He was educated at Wootton Court, Canterbury, Eastbourne College and Brasenose College, Oxford. He was a keen athete - captain of his school Cricket XI, played for Oxford University, the Middlesex & Aldershot Command, and was a member of the Free Foresters and Oxford Harlequins.

After Oxford he enlisted in the army and was gazetted as 2nd Lieut. Royal Fusiliers (13 Feb 1912).2

He married Dorothea Florence ALLAN, daughter of Charles Edward ALLAN and Louisa Mary FORSAITH, at St Mary Abbots Church in Kensington, London, Middlesex, on 8 August 1914.3,2

He joined the 9th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers on its formation at the start of WW1, and was promoted to Lieut. (5 Sep 1914), Captain (18 Oct 1915) and Major, 1st Battn (7th Foot) attached to the 9th Battn, Royal Fusiliers (7 Jul 1916). He acted as Musketry Officer during training (Mar-May 1915), serving from then on in France. He was appointed Adjutant in August, then Second in Command of his Battalion in Jul 1916.2

Maurice died on 3 May 1917 in Arras, Pas de Calais, at age 27 from machine-gun fire near Monchy during the fighting at Arras, after going out in the open to rally his men during a German counter-attack. He was mentioned in despatches by General Haig (gazetted 22 May 1917) for 'gallant and distinguished service in the field.4,5,2' He was buried at the Faubourg d'Amiens Cemetery in Arras.5

His will was probated in Exeter, Devon, on 30 November 1917 with Dorothea Florence ALLAN appointed administrator of effects valued at £97/19/9.4
