His widow was awarded an extraordinary widow's pension of £140 a year by the Indian government, and also awarded a special gratuity of the maximum permitted by the Government's rules. They had no children.⁴ He was buried on 22 July 1932 at the Tehkalbala Cemetery in Peshawar.^5,6

William died on 22 July 1932 at Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar, Bengal, at age 31 of murder, having been stabbed in the neck by an orderly. His assailant tried to escape but was quickly arrested.^7,5,8
