Samuel FORSAITH1

(1744 - 1806)
Father*Samuel FORSAITH1 b. c 1702, d. 1751
Mother*Elizabeth WILLOUGHBY d. 1779
Samuel FORSAITH was born in Bloxholm, Lincolnshire, on 8 April 1744.1,2

He was named as a beneficiary of the will of Samuel FORSAITH, his father , dated 19 June 1751 in Bloxholm, Lincolnshire; he was to receive "my six Cottages or Tenements in Hampton upon Thames in the County of Middlesex" provided he attained 21 years of age.3

On 21 May 1752, after the death of his father he was admitted to the Court Baron (aged 8) as the owner of the 6 cottages previously held by his father and he also appears at the Court Baron held on 9 May 1754, with his mother as guardian (LR 3/43).

At the Court Baron held on 14 May 1767 it was reported that Samuel FORSAITH, jeweller, of Birmingham, on 21 Aug last surrendered two cottages, afterwards three, now six, formerly in the occupation of John PLUCKINGTON after of John LUCY, George JORDAN, and Mary NEWMAN, and now Mr DUFFELL, Mr TAYLOR, Mrs BELSFORD, Mrs PIERREMAN, Mrs BERKHILL and John PLUMMER, to John LANGSTAFFE (LR3/44/1).

He eventually disposed of the cottages via his attorney, Peter RICH to John LANGSTAFFE on 21 Aug 1766 (LR 3/44/1).4 Samuel was apprenticed in Birmingham circa 1759 to a jeweller.5

He married Sarah ANDREWS, daughter of Gamaliel ANDREWS and Ruth REEVE, at Braintree Church in Braintree, Essex, on 19 August 1773.6,5,7

Samuel FORSAITH

(c 1702 - 1751)
Samuel FORSAITH was born in England circa 1702.1,2

He married Elizabeth WILLOUGHBY, daughter of John WILLOUGHBY and Mary (---?---), in England on 12 May 1743.3

He signed a will dated 19 June 1751 in Bloxholm, Lincolnshire, appointing his wife sole executix, with the main beneficiaries being his children, his mother-in-law and his sister and brother-in-law. Strangely, although one Benjamin KIPPIS, elder of Sutterton and 'friend and cousin' was not appointed executor, he was asked to "aid and assist my wife in the execution of this will", for which he was also bequeathed £5.4

It remains unclear as to exactly how the '6 cottages or tenements' referred to in his will came into his possession - possibly purely as an investment, which would imply some wealth attributing to Samuel at this stage.

At the Court Baron held on 1 May 1735 it was recorded that on 23 June 1733 John PLUCKINGTON surrendered two cottages in the occupation of Edward HANCOCK, afterwards divided into three and then four, in the occupation of Wm LAWRENCE, Robert BRADSHAW, Robert JORDAN and Wm PURDY, to Samuel FORSAITH and the records indicate he was actually present. (LR 3/42)

The ownership of these cottages can be followed through in the Manor Books to the Deed of Enfranchisement, with an accompanying plan which enables the cottages to be identified as a terrace still in existence at 46-54 Station Road and known colloquially as ‘Barrack Row’, although the name does not appear to have been derived from any connection with any barracks. The number of houses is now only five, although it is not known how the sixth disappeared. The current houses are three-storeyed but the actual age of the existing structures is unclear - they do not appear to be what would have been called 'cottages' in the 1750's.

It seems unlikely that Samuel was ever a resident of Hampton or Hampton Court, as his name does not appear in the Churchwarden’s Accounts or Rate Assessment lists.5

Samuel died on 10 July 1751 in Bloxholm, Lincolnshire.3 He was buried in July 1751 at the St Mary's churchyard in Bloxholm (Bloxholm is in the Deanery of Lafford, Digby group, and the parish church is Bloxholm St Mary).6
