Henry Eric Wilkie (Hal) ROBERTON

(1904 - 1991)
Henry (Hal) ROBERTON
(1904-1991)
November 1987
Henry Eric Wilkie (Hal) ROBERTON was born in Auckland, Auckland, on 30 December 1904.1

He was educated in England at Sherbourne School and Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where he read science and medicine. His medical training was at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London, where he became the personal house physician to Lord Horder, among the leading physicians of the day in London.
This was followed by further training at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge, Bethlem Royal Psychiatric Hospital, Bedlam, and Sheffield Children's Hospital.
He returned to New Zealand in the 1930s and set up a general practice in Christchurch.2

He married Elisabeth Madeline (Betty) MORRIS, daughter of Arthur William MORRIS and Agnes Durroch CROSS, at St Barnabas Church in Fendalton, Christchurch, Canterbury, on 19 February 1935.3,4

Dr Roberton had a strong interest in clinical research and discovered a disease in women after childbirth caused by low thyroid activity. He was awarded a Cambridge doctorate and in 1946 won the Sir Charles Hastings prize for the best general practice research essay in the British Empire for this research work.2

He was a founding member of the Council for Educational Research and chairman of its Christchurch branch. He had a long involvement with St John Ambulance and held the rank of the Order of St John of Jerusalem. Dr Roberton was also vice-president of the Royal Christchurch Musical Society. He was Christchurch president of the British Medical Association and chairman and provost of the Canterbury faculty of the Royal College of General Practitioners.
Dr Roberton retired on his 80th birthday, but enjoyed playing tennis, golf and bowls well into his 80s, and ice skated until 85. For some years he helped judge the national figure-skating championships, in which he had once competed. He was a familar figure at Charteris Bay, sailing his home made yacht.2

Henry died on 19 February 1991 in Christchurch, Canterbury, at age 86.5,6 He was buried on 21 February 1991 in Christchurch.5

Elizabeth ROBERTS1

(c 1815 - 1912)
Elizabeth ROBERTS was born in Kenwyn, Cornwall, circa 1815. This date is based on her age at death (97), but she claimed to be only 29 in the 1851 census, implying a birth year of 1822 - this is extremely suspect.2

She married James Chynoweth PAUL in Kenwyn, Cornwall, on 7 October 1839.3,4

She was listed in the 1851 census at Frog St in Bere Ferrers, Devon, with her husband James; he was a miner. Their children Ann, James, Grace and Joseph were listed as living with them.2

Elizabeth arrived at Auckland, on 8 August 1856, on board the Lord Burleigh (622 tons) ex-London accompanied by her husband James Chynoweth PAUL and children Ann, James Robert, Grace, Joseph, Elizabeth Jane and Emma (Emmeline).5

She died on 22 December 1912 at Victoria Ave in Mt Eden, Auckland, Auckland.6,7,8 She was buried in December 1912 at the Symonds St Cemetery in Grafton.7
