She was listed in the 1871 census at 2 Victoria Rd in Gravesend, Kent, with her husband John; he was a Master Printer; the household included Mary's niece Annie STOKES (a teacher), who was born in Jamaica.7

She was widowed at age 64 on the death of her husband John on 31 July 1883.8,1,9,10
