James McLEAN1

James McLEAN was born in Mearns, Renfrewshire, in 1856.1,2

He married (--?--) (---?---) in Scotland.

James's second marriage was to Jessie McINNES, daughter of Angus McINNES and Christina (Cirsty) McFADYEN, on 14 January 1881 at 145 Holm St in Blythswood, Glasgow, Lanarkshire. He was an engine-keeper, a widower and she was a bathmaid, both working at the Hydropathic Baths in Row; she claimed to be only 24, but must have been at least 27.1

He was listed in the 1881 census as a boarder at the Hydropathic Porter Lodge in Shandon, Dunbartonshire, with his wife Jessie; the Hydropathic Baths there were formerly West Shandon House, built for Robert Napier in the 1840s and converted to baths in 1880 after his death.3

He was listed in the 1891 census as Head of Family at 83 Belville St in Greenock, Renfrewshire, with his wife Jessie; he was now a ship caulker. Jessie's sons Angus and Donald, having now taken the McLEAN name, were also in the household, as was James's son John by his first marriage and their own children James, Christina, Margaret and Charles. The house had two rooms with windows and both Jessie and Angus claimed to be fluent in Gaelic and English.4

He was listed in the 1901 census as Head of Family at 29 Rue End St in Greenock, Renfrewshire, with his wife Jessie; he was now a boilermaker and this house had four rooms with windows. Their children James, Christina, Margaret, Charles and Martin were listed as living with them.5

He was listed in the 1911 census as Head of Family at 63 Rue End St in Greenock, Renfrewshire, with his wife Jessie; he was now a boilermaker. Their children Margaret, Charles and Martin were listed as living with them.6

James died on 13 December 1928 at 4 Chapel St in Greenock, Renfrewshire.7

Mary McLEOD1

(1851 - 1932)
Mary McLEOD was born in Iona, Argyllshire, on 14 February 1851. She was the daughter of John McLEOD (1818-1865) and Anne McCORMICK (1819-1897) and one of 8 children. Her birth was not registered until Sep 1855, and has been recorded as occurring in 1850, even though she was 1 mth old in the 1851 census. Note also that she consistently took 2-3 years off her age, so later documents implied an 1854 birth.2,3,4
She was listed in the 1851 census at Bra Chreich no.6 in Iona, Argyllshire, with her parents John and Ann and brothers Niel (4) and Archibald (2). Her father was farming 4 acres and she was registered as being only 1 month old.5

She married James McINNES, son of Angus McINNES and Christina (Cirsty) McFADYEN, at 56 Jane St (Free Church), Blythswood in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, on 13 November 1874. He was a journeyman joiner, she a domestic servant.6

She was listed in the 1881 census as Head of Family at 20 Bunessan in Bunessan, Mull, Argyllshire. Her children Christina, John and Ann were listed as living with her.7

She was listed in the 1891 census at 113 Wellfield St in Barony, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, with her husband James; he was a joiner. Their children Christina, John, Ann, Angus, Margaret and Catherine were listed as living with them.8

She was listed in the 1901 census at 6 Janefield Ave in Springburn, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, with her husband James; he was a joiner, the whole family were fluent in English and Gaelic, and the house had 3 rooms with windows. Their children Ann, Angus, Catherine and Robert were listed as living with them.3

She was listed in the 1911 census at 95 Campsie St in Springburn, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, with her husband James; he was a joiner in a locomotive works, the family were fluent in English and Gaelic, and the house had 3 rooms with windows. Their children Angus, Catherine and Robert were listed as living with them.9

Mary left Glasgow on 18 September 1914 on board the 'Scandinavian', bound for Quebec, accompanied by Catherine Jane and Angus Charles.10,11

Mary died on 25 November 1932 at 25 Little Ave in Weston, York, Ontario, at age 81 of a cerebral haemorrhage. The informant was her son Angus.12 She was buried on 28 November 1932 at the Riverside Cemetery in Weston.12
