Richard James CUMMING was born in Miltownpass, Co. Westmeath, circa 1860.2

His Dublin Metropolitan Police service record shows him enlisting in January 1880, aged 20, a labourer, Protestant, height 5' 9 1/2". He was promoted from '4th rate' to '3rd rate' in June 1881, but it appears he left the force shortly thereafter, certainly before another promotion may have been due in about 1883.3

He appears to have emigrated circa 1883 from Ireland.4

He married Mary Ann FLOOD, daughter of George FLOOD and Ellen DOHERTY, at the Minister's residence (Presbyterian), Arthur St in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane, Queensland, on 28 October 1885.5,6,1

The family resided at Brisbane, Queensland, in 1919, at the Fire Station, Vulture St where Richard James was the Asst Superintendent and Richard Frederick was a fireman.7

Richard died on 3 September 1920 at Vulture St in Brisbane, Queensland, of heart failure. The informant was his son Richard Frederick CUMMING.8,9,10 He was buried on 4 September 1920 at the Sth Brisbane Cemetery, 181 Annerley Rd, Dutton Park.8,11

They lived in Elimbah, Queensland, in 1936, with George listed as a station master, Dulcie a dressmaker, and Ronald a labourer.4

He enlisted in the Australian Army (#Q101015) on 5 May 1941 at Annerley, Queensland. He was discharged from the 15th Infantry Battalion on the 22 Jan 1946.5

Ronald died on 20 February 1983 in Brisbane, Queensland, at age 69.6,7

William Richard CUMMING CVO was born in Forrest Hill, Queensland, on 15 October 1911.1,2

He graduated with a BA from the Brisbane, Queensland, on 13 April 1934.3

He lived in 1935 at Hotel Kurrajong in Canberra, ACT.4

He married Evelyn Joyce PAUL, daughter of George PAUL and Evelyn Jessie MITCHELL, at St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney, New South Wales, on 26 August 1939.5

He graduated with an LLB from the University of Sydney on 6 June 1942.3

He signed the register at Ralph Dunstan PAUL and Esther Clara SMITH's wedding at St Paul's Church in Chatswood, Sydney, New South Wales, on 10 March 1945.6

He graduated with a Diploma of Public Administration from the University of Sydney in New South Wales on 19 June 1948.3

He served as Lt AMF (1938), Capt AIF (1942), Major (1943) and AAPC to the Reserve (1946).

During a distinguished Public Service career he was a Barrister in NSW (1942), Advisor to the Property Tax Taxation Dept (1948-51), Senior Executive Officer to the Prime Minister's Dept (1951-55), Director of the ACT Royal Visits (1953-53,56,57-58) and Director-General of the Royal visit 1959; Secretary of the Historic Memorials Committee, the Commonwealth Art Advisory Bd, and the Commonwealth Literary Fund while Assistant Secretary to the Prime Minister's Dept (1955-60 and 1966-70).
During his overseas postings he was Counsellor (Cultural Affairs) at the Australian High Commission, London (1973-4), Acting Deputy High Commissioner and Official Secretary, London (1960-66 and 1970-73), and appointed Extra Gentleman Usher to the Queen (1962-66 and 1971-74).
Other positions held include Member of the Council of the National Library of Australia (1967-70), Council of the Institute of Aboriginal Studies (1968-70), Secretary, Advisory Board of Assistance to Australian Composers (1966-70), Interim Council of the Australian National Gallery (1967-70), Member Australia Society of London, Chairman Public Lending Rights Committee, Australia Council from 1976, and member of the University Club (Syd) and Oriental (London).3

William died on 17 August 1984 at Neringah Hospital, Wahroonga in Sydney, New South Wales, at age 72 of carcinoma of the prostate (4 years). The informant was his widow Evelyn, who was also present.7 He was cremated at the Northern Suburbs Crematorium in Nth Ryde on 20 August 1984, and his ashes placed at niche 404 PT.7,8

Annie Elizabeth CURREN was born in Queensland on 1 November 1892. She was the daughter of Thomas CURREN (storekeeper) and Rose Ann LACY or LACEY.2,1

She married Hugh PATERSON in Rockhampton, Queensland, in 1911.1,3

Annie's second marriage was to William CUMMING, son of Richard James CUMMING and Mary Ann FLOOD, in 1946 in Brisbane, Queensland.1

She was widowed at age 67 on the death of her husband William on 29 May 1960.4

Annie died on 27 November 1967 at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, Queensland, at age 75 of bronchopneumonia, atherosclerosis and senility.1 She was buried on 28 November 1967 at the Sth Brisbane Cemetery, 181 Annerley Rd, Dutton Park.5
