Ivall Moira (Mollie) Hansen
(1912 - 1988)
Father* | David Ernest Hansen CMG b. 1884, d. 1972 |
Mother* | Ethel May Hampson b. 1885, d. 1912 |
Ivall Moira (Mollie) Hansen was born in Invercargill, Southland, on 2 December 1912.1 She was also known in the family as Heffalump, as all the family carried nicknames from the Winnie-the-Pooh books.2
As her mother died shortly after her birth, she was initially looked after by her aunt Margaret Emma (Daisy) Hampson, who later married her father David. Thus Mollie's siblings were actually only half-brothers. Mollie suppressed this information from her family until an inquiry from her second daughter as to when her grand-parents were holding their Golden Wedding anniversary required the full story to be told.
She was also proud of a claim to be descended from John of Gaunt, which was not generally accepted by the wider family. However it has since been proven that the claim does stand up to scrutiny (for the proof see the page 'A Royal Connection?').2
She married Morris Morell Macdonald, son of Arnold Morell (Dick) Macdonald and Ella Mary Morris, at St Marks Church in Opawa, Christchurch, Canterbury, on 20 October 1934.3,4
She was widowed at age 67 on the death of her husband Morris on 19 November 1980.5,6,7
Ivall died on 23 August 1988 in Wellington at age 75.8,9 She was cremated at the Karori Crematorium on 26 August 1988.9 Her ashes were buried on 7 May 1989 at Invercargill Eastern Cemetery in Invercargill.10
