Dugald McColl1

(1811 - 1879)
Father*Hugh McColl
Mother*Mary McColl
Dugald McColl was born in Ardchattan, Argyllshire, on 6 May 1811. Although this birth is recorded by the GRO as having parents John and Mary it is difficult to read and may be Hugh, as other records claim. His year of birth is suspect, as his age at census varies from an implied birth year of 1811 to 1819; his death record implies 1814 and his gravestone implies 1811.2 He was baptised in Ardchattan, Argyllshire, on 7 May 1811.2

Marriage banns for Dugald and Cathrine Sinclair were published on 14 December 1845 in Inverkip, Renfrewshire. Banns were also published on the 21 Dec, but it is not clear that these are for this couple - the location seems totally out of place.3

He married Cathrine Sinclair, daughter of Duncan Sinclair and Margaret (Peggy) McColl, possibly in Connel, Argyllshire, in 1846. This is based on their daughter Jean's birth record, which states the marriage was at Connel - this conflicts with the documented banns in Inverkip, Renfrew, but is more likely.4

He was listed in the 1851 census as Head of Family in Barvulin, Ardchattan, Argyllshire, with his wife Cathrine; he was a crofter of 3 acres. Their children John, Duncan and Hugh were listed as living with them.5

He was listed in the 1861 census as Head of Family in Barvulin, Ardchattan, Argyllshire, with his wife Cathrine; he was a farmer of 18 acres and their house had 3 rooms with windows. Their children John, Duncan, Hugh, Margaret, Jean and Dugald were listed as living with them.6

He was widowed at age 51 on the death of his wife Cathrine on 17 May 1862.7,8
He was listed in the 1871 census, lodging at 101 Holm St in Blythswood, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, in the CARMICHAEL household, but he gave his occupation as farmer.9

Dugald died on 22 November 1879 at a cart on the road between Nth Connel Inn and Nth Ledaig farmhouse in Ardchattan, Argyllshire, at age 68 from 'disease of the heart'; his occupation was now given as sawyer.7,10 He was buried at the Achnaba Cemetery in Ardchattan Church.7

Duncan McColl

(1881 - 1938)
Father*Duncan McColl b. 1848, d. 1889
Mother*Isabella McColl b. c 1848, d. 1924
Duncan McColl was born in New Zealand in 1881.1,2

He served in WWI in the Rifle Brigade of the 1st NZEF (#51857), H Co reinforcements, embarking on 12 June 1917.
He is known to have visited the FERGUSON family in Glasgow sometime during or just after the war, as they remember his NZ Army uniform, but his original trade was as a carpenter.3

Duncan died on 10 November 1938 at 15 Exeter St in Christchurch, Canterbury.1,4

He had been visited in the late 1930's by Alexander FERGUSON (1st cousin, once removed) at Exeter St where he was living virtually as a rag-and-bone man; his mind was wandering - he later probably commited suicide by gassing. The Public Trustee made little attempt to uncover his Scottish cousins until prompted by Alexander, who discovered letters home to Scotland in the abandoned house after his death. Another family branch (possibly the Fosters of Wanganui) were attempting to claim all of his limited estate until then.5 He was buried on 12 November 1938 at the Bromley Cemetery.6,7
