Deborah Hannah Blomfield

(1817 - 1908)
Father*Ezekiel Blomfield b. 1778, d. 1818
Mother*Mary Funnell b. c 1774
Deborah Hannah STEVENS (nee BLOMFIELD)(1817-1908)
Deborah Hannah Blomfield was born in Denton or Wortwell, Norfolk, on 11 February 1817.1,2,3 and was baptised on 2 October 1817 at the Independent chapel in Wortwell cum Harleston.1

She married Charles Green Stevens at the Registry Office in Denton, District of Loddon & Clavering, Norfolk, on 21 November 1837.4,5,6,7

She and her husband Charles arrived in Liverpool on 2 April 1853 on the Great Britain, the ship having left Sydney on the 20 Dec 1852 accompanied by their children Fanny, Hannah, Charles, John and Joseph.8
She was listed as the mother of Fanny Maria Stevens in the 1871 Census at 19 Church St, St Mary's in Warwick, Warwickshire.2

She was listed in the 1881 census as Head of Family at Marwood House in Honiton, Devon. Her children Fanny, Emily, Alice and Hannah were listed as living with her, plus her grand-daughters Eleanor Joy Cornish, Mary Cornish, Frances Elizabeth Mary Stevens and Adele Margaret Edith Stevens and her grand-sons John Lucius Cary Stevens, Reginald Charles Jeremie Stevens and James Algernon Stevens. The household included a house-maid, servant and nurse.9

A supposed connection of Marwood House to Sir Francis Drake appears to be just a story - Drake did not reside at Marwood House and could not have planted the cork tree near the house as he died before it was built.5

She was listed in the 1891 census as Head of Family at Marwood House in Honiton, Devon; she was 'living on her own means'. Her children Fanny, Emily and Alice were listed as living with her, as was a servant.3

Deborah's death was registered between January 1908 and March 1908 in Honiton, Devon.10

(1778 - 1818)
Father*Stephen Blomfield b. c 1750, d. 1809
Mother*Elizabeth Luiss b. c 1750, d. 1799
Rev. Ezekiel BLOMFIELD (1778-1818) from National Portrait Gallery under common licence
Ezekiel Blomfield was born in North Walsham, Norfolk, on 28 October 1778.2,3

He joined the church of the Rev S Newton of Norwich, and then proceeded to the non-Conformist Homerton College. Later he accepted a call to a congregation at Wymondham.2

He married Mary Funnell, daughter of Richard Funnell and Martha Beck, in England on 20 October 1800.4

He worked with Brightley, a printer of Bungay, Suffolk, and eventually went into partnership with him. They published 'A General View of the World, Geographical, Historical and Philosophical; on a Plan entirely new' in two quarto volumes, and a number of other works. The British Library catalog lists 10 works attributed to him, mainly published from 1809 onwards, although none appear to have been crtitically accepted.2

Around 1809 he moved from Wymondham to Wortwell, Norfolk, and later founded the Norfolk and Norwich Auxilary British and Foreign Bible Society.2

Ezekiel died on 14 July 1818 in Glemham, Suffolk, at age 39; memoirs in his posthumously published book 'Philosophy of History' state that he was at the home of his friend, Mr Samuel Webster of Benhall, near Saxmundham, and died while he was in the act of dressing himself in the morning.2 He was buried on 21 July 1818 at the Grounds of the Meeting house in Wortwell.5

His 'Philosophy of History' with attached memoir was posthumously published by his printer to assist in providing for his family - judging by his daughters subsequent marriages and emigrations, this does not appear to have been particularly successful.2
