He enlisted in the 74th OS Battalion, Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force (#136649) on 8 February 1916 at Weston, York, Ontario. He gave his occupation as electrician, was described as being of fair complexion, grey eyes, and stood 5 ft 3 in.6
He served with the 52nd Battalion from Jun 1916, having sailed from Halifax to Liverpool on the Empress of Britain, arriving 9 Apr 1916. He was wounded at Sanctuary Wood with a shell shrapnel wound to the right thigh and on 12 Jul 1916 was admitted to No.3 Canadian Casualty Clearing station. By then gangrene had set in and his leg was amputated 6" below the knee at the Moron Bank War Hospital on 30 Jul 1916.
The Medical Board subsequently judged him only 70% fit and he was invalided back to Canada for eventual discharge on 31 Jul 1917.6
He married Eliza Ann Pogue at Cookes Church in Toronto, Ontario, on 15 July 1920.7
He was listed in the 1921 census, living with John Pogue (his father-in-law), his wife Eliza and extended family at 288 Berkeley St in Toronto, Ontario; he was working as an electrical engineer.8
He was the informant of Angus Charles McInnes's death at 25 Little Ave in Weston, York, Ontario, on 28 January 1934.9
Robert died on 27 February 1975 in Toronto, Ontario, at age 81.6 He was buried at the St James Cemetery, 635 Parliament St.10
