Her children Jane and Ann were listed as living with her, as were her grandsons Donald Fergusson and Ewen (or Hugh) Cumming and they were all classified as Gaelic speakers.¹²

She was listed in the 1871 census in Gairloch Northern, Ross and Cromarty, with her husband John; he was now farming 1050 acres (of which only 50 was classed as arable). The household included five of their children and a servant.⁶

She was widowed on the death of her husband John on 6 May 1874.⁷

Jean died on 19 February 1877 at 'Drumchork' in Gairloch, Ross, of 'supposed dropsy (8 mths).⁸'
