James Chynoweth Paul was born in Bere Ferrers, Devon, circa 1816. He appears to have been the son of William James PAUL and Nancy CHYNOWETH.2
He married Elizabeth Roberts in Kenwyn, Cornwall, on 7 October 1839.3,4
He was listed in the 1851 census as Head of Family at Frog St in Bere Ferrers, Devon, with his wife Elizabeth; he was a miner. Their children Ann, James, Grace and Joseph were listed as living with them.2
James arrived at Auckland, on 8 August 1856, on board the Lord Burleigh (622 tons) ex-London accompanied by his wife Elizabeth Roberts and children Ann, James Robert, Grace, Joseph, Elizabeth Jane and Emma (Emmeline).5
James died on 27 July 1895 at Park Rd in Auckland.6,7,8 He was buried on 30 July 1895 at the Symonds St Cemetery in Grafton.7,8
