Winifred Flood1
(c 1813 - 1890)
Father* | John Flood1 |
Mother* | Judith Russell1 |
Winifred Flood was born in Co. Tipperary Nth circa 1813.1 and was baptised on 28 October 1813.1,2
She married James Carey in Co. Tipperary circa 1835.3
According to her son James, she had the following children: Patrick (born c.1849), John (c.1851), Michael (c.1853), Nora (c.1857), James (c.1858), Johanna (c.1860) and another son, deceased by 1890, but much of this information is incorrect. It is possible that only the male children emigrated to Australia and hence James was confused on the dates of his sisters.
From Irish Catholic baptism registers it appears some of Winifred Flood's children by James Carey/Carew were Michael (bapt 14 Aug 1845), James (bapt 26 Mar 1853), Johanna (bapt. 19 Aug 1855) and George (bapt. 26 Oct 1859).
Patrick's date is also accurate as the Patrick buried next to Winifred in the Toowoomba Cemetery died in 1892 aged 44.
The Queensland death registers show the following people with parents of James Carey and Winifred Flood:
Michael Carey, d. 13 Aug 1916
Patrick Carey, d. 23 Dec 1892, aged 44
James Carey, d. 26 Jul 1926
John Carey, d.5 Feb 1936
also an Annie Carey, d. 10 Jan 1907, parents James Carey/Johanna Flood (possible error).3
She appears to have arrived in Queensland circa 1877.3
Winifred died on 3 August 1890 in Southbrook, Darling Downs, Queensland, of 'congestion of the lungs'. The informant was her son James Carey who was confused on her age (given as 70) but gave her parents as John Flood and Johanna Russell and birthplace as Kilcommon, Tipperary.3 She was buried on 4 August 1890 at the Toowoomba and Drayton Cemetery in Toowoomba. James Carey (her husband? d. 2 Jan 1884); Patrick Carey (d. 23 Dec 1892 aged 44) and an unnamed Carey (d. 4 Jan 1890) are buried in the adjacent plot 56.
Queensland death records give an unnamed female Carey, death date 4 Jan 1890, parents John Carey, Margaret Noonan.3,4
