George Flood

(c 1825 - 1915)
Father*John Flood1
Mother*Judith Russell1
George FLOOD (1825-1915)
George Flood was born in Newport, Co. Tipperary Nth, circa 1825. His birth date is suspect in the official records - when joining the RIC in 1849 he claimed to be 22 (implying birth year of 1827); at his RIC discharge in 1880 after 30 years 7 mths service, he claimed to be 62 (implying birth in 1818) and the subsequent census records (1901, 1911) imply birth in 1829-30.2 He was baptised in Knockacullin, Newport, Co. Tipperary Nth, on 30 August 1825.3

George's Royal Irish Constabulary service records (#13554) show that he was a labourer, claimed age 22, height 5' 8-7/8", a native of Tipperary Nth and Catholic, when first appointed on 17 November 1849. He served in the Reserve until March 1850, but was subsequently posted to Donegal (May 1854), then Fermanagh (Sep 1855). His career was a mixture of approbation (Aug 1858) and admonishment (Oct 1853 and May 1859) followed by a caution, but the records do not show the causes.4

Marriage banns for George and Ellen Dougherty were published on 17 October 1853 in Letterkenny, Kilmacrenan, Co. Donegal.5

He married Ellen Dougherty in Ireland.

He was pensioned out of the force on 10 July 1880 at the claimed age of 62, with the rank of Constable, having served for 30 years and 7 months, and was given an annual pension of £59. The last pension payment was made to his daughter Ellen Jane.6

He was widowed on the death of his wife Ellen on 4 February 1900.7,8

He was listed in the 1901 census as Head of Family at House 58 in Ballinamallard, Co. Fermanagh; he was a Royal Irish Constabulary pensioner, claiming to be 71 years old. His children Joseph and Ellen were listed as living with him.9

He was listed in the 1911 census as Head of Family at House 21 in Ballinamallard Town, Co. Fermanagh; he was a constabulary pensioner, claiming to be 82 yrs old. His children Ellen and Joseph were listed as living with him, and the census stated he had a total of 8 children, all living.10

George died on 25 March 1915 in Irvinestown, Co. Fermanagh.11 He was buried at the St Mary's graveyard (section B, plot 60), Coa in Ballinamallard.
