John Smyth Mitchell was born in St Leonards Shoreditch, London, Middlesex, on 28 November 1811.1,2 and was baptised on 2 January 1812 at Independent Tabernacle, City Rd in St Leonards Shoreditch.2
The siblings John and Ann were listed in the 1841 census in Ludgate, London, Middlesex, with their father Edward Mitchell.3
He married Mary Smyth Forsaith, daughter of Samuel Forsaith and Elizabeth Smyth, in Shoreditch, London, Middlesex, on 29 August 1844.4,1,5
He was widowed at age 33 on the death of his wife Mary on 3 June 1845.4,1,6
John's second marriage was to Sarah Forsaith, daughter of John Forsaith and Elizabeth Sarah Ward, on 21 May 1847 in Shoreditch, London, Middlesex.1,7
He was widowed at age 37 on the death of his wife Sarah on 15 August 1849.1,8
