William John Mitchell1

(1853 - 1929)
Father*William Mitchell1 b. c 1824, d. 1902
Mother*Jemima Cradick2 b. c 1819, d. 1877
William John MITCHELL (1853-1929) family - probably taken before emigration to Australia in 1884.
L-R: Jessie G F AMOR (1872-1948), Jessie MITCHELL (nee DUNSTAN, AMOR)(1852-1918), William J D MITCHELL (1875-1917) and William J MITCHELL
William John Mitchell was born at Buckland Monachoram in Horrabridge, Devon, on 15 July 1853.3,4,5,6
He was listed as the grandson of Elizabeth Lobb in the 1861 Census in Corneal, St Dominick, Cornwall, along with her children Elizabeth, James and Jane.7

He enlisted in the Royal Navy, first volunteering for continuous service on 21 January 1868, then commencing a 10 yrs engagement on 15 Jul 1871, initially as Boy 2nd class (height 5' 3/4", hair and eyes brown) assigned to HMS Impregnable on 21 January 1868.5
He was listed in the 1871 census aboard the 4th-rate steam frigate HMS Narcissus (between Jamaica and Lucia) as a Boy, 1st Class.8

He married Jessie Dunstan, daughter of John Dunstan and Jane Rickard Nanscawen, at Hope Chapel (Baptist), Love St in Devonport, Devon, on 10 August 1874. William was a seaman on HMS Indus, while Jessie was living at 25 Sleat St, Morice Town. While her age appears correct in this entry, her father is recorded as 'John Danger', Seaman RN, deceased - possibly a registrar's error?9,10,11,1

He was listed in the 1881 census as Head of Family at 4 Lennox Terrace in Portsea, Hampshire, with his wife Jessie; he was an Able Seaman on HMS Malabar. The household included Jessie's daughter from her first marriage, Jessie Georgina Frances Amor. Their child William was listed as living with them.12 He was discharged on 10 July 1881 after service on a variety of ships including HMS Zealous, Royal Adelaide, Indus, Cambridge, Excellent, Bellerophon, Duke of Wellington, Warrior and finally Malabar. His records generally show Very Good and even Exemplary conduct, but in Aug 1877 he was sent to Melville Island prison, and later to Lewes Gaol for 2 years, with his gunnery qualifications cancelled for misconduct. It is unclear exactly what the transgression was, but on release he served out the remainder of his 10 year service period. It is somewhat ironic that he was subsequently employed as a prison warder in Australia.5

William arrived at Sydney, New South Wales, on 12 March 1884, on board the 'Warwick' from Plymouth accompanied by his wife Jessie Dunstan and children William John Dunstan and Jessie Georgina Frances. He gave his occupation as 'rigger.13'

He was widowed at age 65 on the death of his wife Jessie on 10 September 1918.14,15,16,17

He signed the register at Frederick Mitchell and Grace Elizabeth Morris's wedding at St Philips Church (CoE) in Auburn, New South Wales, on 29 October 1919.18

William died in March 1929 in Goulburn, New South Wales, at age 75.19 He was buried on 1 April 1929 at the Goulburn General Cemetery in Goulburn.20
