Lena (Eileen) Smart was born in Queensland on 10 October 1896. She was the daughter of Peter SMART and Selina McALISTER.2
She married Richard Frederick Cumming, son of Richard James Cumming and Mary Ann Flood, in Brisbane, Queensland, on 29 October 1914.3,4
They lived at Strath St in Sth Brisbane, Queensland, in 1925, where Richard was a fireman.5
She was widowed at age 60 on the death of her husband Richard on 7 September 1957.6
Lena died on 19 June 1974 in Queensland at age 77.7 She was buried on 20 June 1974 at the Sth Brisbane Cemetery, 181 Annerley Rd, Dutton Park.8

Alexander McDougall Smith was born at 28 Factory St in Pollockshaw, Eastwood, Renfrewshire, on 4 September 1904. He was the son of Peter SMITH (colliery engine fitter) & Janet Hunter Holmes McDOUGALL (deceased at time of his marriage).2
He married Christina Marion McInnes Edwards, daughter of Joseph Edwards and Jane Isa McInnes, at 261 Kennedy St in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, on 9 May 1941. At the time of their marriage he was a coal-miner, she a machinist.3
From related family marriage/birth records it is known he worked as a coalminer until 1942; at one time was an Irvine Town Councillor, but by 1944 was a political organiser (possibly the Communist party), which is also stated on his death certificate.1
