He enlisted in the Australian Army, initially assigned to the 24th Battalion, 11th reinforcements as an Acting Sergeant (#4445, height 5ft 7in, 11 stone, ruddy complexion, brown eyes) on 28 August 1915 at Melbourne, Victoria.³
He served with the 24th Battalion and embarked from Melboune on the RMS Malawa on 21 March 1916 (embarkation roll 23/41/3). He had been an accountant, and gave his father William JEFFREY of Wheeler's Hill as his next-of-kin. His service records are somewhat confused, but it appears he became ill and was sent to hospital as early as May 1916, after arriving in Egypt. By Nov 1916 he had been reduced in rank to Private while serving at the 24th's base depot in Etaples, France.
A note in his records on 24 Jul 1917 from the 11th Australian General Hospital states "Was in London when zeppelins came over and dates his troubles from that time. Tremor of both hands, Slight tachycardia. Family history of insanity". He was invalided back to Australia on the Runic, suffering from shell shock, and was discharged on medical grounds on 16 Aug 1917.³
