James's birth was registered between July 1862 and September 1862 in Bedford, Bedfordshire.1
He married Lucy Charlotte Nutter, daughter of Frederick Nutter and Eliza Heath Macdonald, at her father's residence in Auckland on 13 April 1887.2,3,4
He signed a will dated 21 April 1887 in Auckland, in which he named his wife Lucy as executrix and beneficiary of his estate, except for land at 40 & 42 Offa St, Bedford, Bedfordshire. He bequeathed this property to his aunt Emily Owen, wife of the Rev. George Owen, who was a missionary in Peking.5

Emma Ivall was born in Camden, London, Middlesex, on 3 February 1835. She was the daughter of David and Martha IVALL.1 She was baptised at St Pancras in Camden, London, Middlesex, on 2 March 1835.1
She married Joseph Martin Heywood at Parish Church in Hammersmith, London, Middlesex, on 15 May 1856. They spent three months travelling on the Continent for their honeymoon, before leaving for New Zealand.2,3
She and her husband Joseph then left for New Zealand on the Egmont (787 tons), leaving Gravesend on 11 September 1856 and arriving in Lyttelton on 23 Dec 1856.4
During the voyage to New Zealand, Emma created a cotton bed-cover featuring the words 'EMH SHIP EGMONT 1856' which is still in use by one of her gt-gt-grand-daughters.
