James' birth date and birth place wander considerably in the 1861-1891 census entries, but his death entry gives his parents names, which allows us to find his true birth details in this parish. He was the son of Alexander McPHERSON (shepherd) and Margaret ROSS who lived in the Parish of Alvie, which is his claimed birthplace in the census records.² He was baptised in Abernethy and Kincardine, Perthshire, on 10 December 1828.²

He married Janet (Jessie) Fergusson, daughter of John Fergusson and Christy McGregor, at the Manse in Moulin, Perthshire, on 4 May 1858. He was a ploughman and only left his mark (no signature) and is recorded as Alexander, which was actually his father's name; she claimed to be 21, although was under-age at the time and used the name of Jessie.³

He was listed in the 1861 census as Head of Family at Middlebridge in Blair Atholl, Perthshire, with his wife Janet; he was a ploughman. Their children John and Margaret were listed as living with them.⁴

He was listed in the 1881 census as Head of Family at Invervack in Blair Atholl, Perthshire, with his wife Janet; he was now classed as a farm servant. Their children Christian, Mary, Catherine and Alexander were listed as living with them.⁶

He was listed in the 1891 census as Head of Family at Lower Invervack in Blair Atholl, Perthshire, with his wife Janet; he was working as an agricultural labourer. Their children Alexander, Jean, William and Mary were listed as living with them.⁷

He was widowed at age 66 on the death of his wife Janet on 18 February 1895.⁸

James died on 20 May 1897 at Lower Invervack in Blair Atholl, Perthshire, at age 68 of cardiac debility.⁹
