James Chynoweth Paul was born in Bere Ferrers, Devon, circa 1816. He appears to have been the son of William James PAUL and Nancy CHYNOWETH.²

He married Elizabeth Roberts in Kenwyn, Cornwall, on 7 October 1839.^3,4

He was listed in the 1851 census as Head of Family at Frog St in Bere Ferrers, Devon, with his wife Elizabeth; he was a miner. Their children Ann, James, Grace and Joseph were listed as living with them.²

James arrived at Auckland, on 8 August 1856, on board the Lord Burleigh (622 tons) ex-London accompanied by his wife Elizabeth Roberts and children Ann, James Robert, Grace, Joseph, Elizabeth Jane and Emma (Emmeline).⁵

James died on 27 July 1895 at Park Rd in Auckland.^6,7,8 He was buried on 30 July 1895 at the Symonds St Cemetery in Grafton.^7,8

Ralph Paul was born at Hell's Hole, Cramlington in Blyth, Tynemouth, Northumberland, on 6 September 1850. It appears he was actually born and registered as Ralph STOBBS, and assumed the surname PAUL after his parents subsequent bigamous relationship commenced.^4,2,5

Both claimed to be aged 21 but their births indicate an age of 20, at best. Her father James BELL was a coal-miner, as was Ralph and his father George.^7,8

Ralph's second marriage was to Barbara Warner Marshall, daughter of Thomas Marshall and Isabella Moor, on 21 April 1873 at the Registry Office in North Shields, Tynemouth, Northumberland.^11,12,13,3

Ralph arrived at Sydney, New South Wales, on 10 March 1878, on board the 'Northbrook' accompanied by his wife Barbara Warner Marshall and children Mary Isabella, Thomas and Margaret. His occupation was given as 'miner' and none of the family had relations in the colony.¹⁴

He was widowed at age 60 on the death of his wife Barbara on 6 March 1911.^15,16

Ralph died on 29 April 1926 at Cessnock District Hospital in Cessnock, New South Wales, at age 75 of cerebral thrombosis; his eldest son Thomas was the informant.^1,17 He was buried on 30 April 1926 at the Cessnock Cemetery, Wine Country Drive in Cessnock.^18,1
