He commenced work with the Colonial Bank shortly after it was established and was managing the bank's branch in Lawrence when it amalgamated with the Bank of New Zealand - he was subsequently promoted to Invercargill.
He was next appointed to the inspectors' staff, rising to be resident insepctor, head-quartered in Wellington. He was on sick leave at the time of his death in Dunedin.⁴

He married Emily Louisa Haggitt at St Paul's in Dunedin, Otago, on 23 September 1886, The wedding was preceded by a ball at the Haggitt residence and it is possible that the reception was then held at 'Wychwood.^1,5,6,7'
