James Howe Morris1

(1821 - 1896)
Father*Alexander Morris1 b. 1777, d. 1854
Mother*Marion Howe1 b. 1786, d. 1847
James Howe Morris was born in Greenock, Renfrewshire, on 10 May 1821.1 and was baptised on 22 May 1821 in West (Old) Parish.1

On the death of their father in 1854, the MORRIS siblings inherited nearly £1000. It is likely that the inheritance provided much of the capital for James and his brother Arthur to purchase (for £1550) a small ship, the US-built S. W. Nash, which Arthur renamed the Dunedin. (See the history of the Dunedin for more detail).2

A small band of Scottish pioneers and brothers Arthur and James left London for New Zealand on the Dunedin, under the command of Capt McNeur in October 1855; after picking up Arthur at Portsmouth on the 29 Oct, the Dunedin completed the passage to Port Chalmers in only 84 days, a record at the time.3
He was listed as the brother of Margaret Hunter Morris in the 1891 Census at Mayfield Cottage, West Back Rd in Irvine, Ayrshire, and was a retired accountant.4

He was appointed executor of Margaret Hunter Morris's estate in Irvine, Ayrshire, on 25 September 1894.5,6,7,8

James died on 31 May 1896 in Irvine, Ayrshire, at age 75.9,6,10,11,12 He was buried at the Old Parish Churchyard in Irvine.12
Thrugh-stone of HUNTER, HOWE, MORRIS families, Irvine Old Parish Kirkyard

His estate was confirmed in Irvine, Ayrshire, on 12 November 1896 with Arthur William Morris appointed executor but was complicated by its geographic spread and his death intestate - although sealed in Irvine, 12 Nov 1896 with a value of £1279/19/-, it had a confirmation seal in England (21 Nov 1896) with a further lodgement by his brother Arthur in Dunedin, New Zealand (12 Mar 1897) declaring the estate there was no more than £9808.

The Scottish estate consisted of cash, furniture, Clydesdale Bank deposits and rents due. The English portion included Dalgety Ltd debentures and interest as inherited from his sister Margaret.
As the sole surviving family member, his brother Arthur, while acting as executor, was also the sole inheritor of the estate, including the substantial New Zealand holdings.13,6,10,14
