Derek Harcourt Kitchin was born in Wandsworth, London, Middlesex, on 20 August 1896.^2,4,3,5,6 He was baptised at Christ Church in Streatham Hill, Lambeth, London, on 4 October 1896.⁶
He was listed in the 1921 census at 8 Waldegrave Park in Twickenham, Middlesex, as a visitor to Frederick Herbert and Lilian Harcourt Kitchin, journalists, who were actualy his parents. He was employed in the Sudan Civil Service as an Inspector.⁷

He married Mary Kathleen Forsaith Lander, daughter of Richard Brook Lander and Annie Ada Forsaith, in London, Middlesex, on 12 August 1925.^1,2

He was listed in the 1939 Register at 16 Hillside in Wimbledon, Surrey, with Mary Kathleen Forsaith Lander; he was a civil servant (House of Lords Reports), barrister, journalist and air raid warden. The household included a chaffeur, housemaid and cook.⁵

He was widowed at age 48 on the death of his wife Mary on 5 February 1945.^8,9

He was appointed executor of Mary Kathleen Forsaith Lander's estate in Llandudno, Conway, on 1 May 1945.⁹
