Thomas Hodge Wymond Nanscawen was born in Landulph, Cornwall, in 1797.3 and was baptised on 1 December 1797 in Landulph.4
He married Susanna Rickard, daughter of James Rickard and Susanna Curties, in St Mellion, Cornwall, on 26 April 1822.5
He was listed in the 1841 census in St Mellion, Cornwall, with his wife Susanna; he was a publican. Their child Jane was listed with them, also her siblings William, Susanna, Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah, Maria plus Susanna Rickard (65) and William (30). The Rickards appear to be Susanna's mother (also Susanna) and a brother.6
He was listed in the 1851 census as Head of Family in St Mellion, Cornwall, with his wife Susanna; he now claimed to be a victualer (rather than publican) and their children Mary, Sarah, Maria and Anna were also present.3

James Nelson Neal
(1910 - 1991)
James Nelson Neal was born in Dandridge, Tennessee, on 13 May 1910. He was the seventh child of John William NEAL, a merchant, and Sarah Catherine THOMAS, who claimed a Cherokee heritage.1,2,3
He was listed in the 1920 census at a farm in Jefferson, Tennessee, with his family - parents John W (52) and Kathrine (45) and siblings Bob (16), John (11), Katie (6), Rosco (21 mths). His father, who came from Nth Carolina, was the farm owner.4
He married Noma J Arnold in Akron, Summit Co, Ohio, on 13 July 1929. Both of them were workers at the Firestone rubber works and both claimed to be 22 (i.e. born 1907) rather than admit they were actually only 19.5
He was listed in the 1930 US census at 99 Tract G-5, W Mildred Ave in Akron, Summit Co, Ohio, with his wife Noma; the head of family was his brother-in-law Neil GILLIS (greenhouse gardener), married to his sister Rosa and also present were his parents John and Catherine, his brother Frank (12), plus Neil and Rosa's 3 children. James and Rosa were both clerks, but the 1931 Akron City directory indicates they had moved to Nth Portage Path and he was then a chauffeur.6
He was listed in the 1940 US census as Head of Household at 3B Nth Portage Path in Akron, Summit Co, Ohio, with his wife Noma; he gave an occupation of 'hired hand' with a $1600 annual income.7
He served with the US Army (#35230174) after enlisting at Akron, Ohio on 21 May 1943, from 28 May until his release on 18 Nov 1945. At enlistment he was an electrician, married, with 3 yrs of High Schooling, height 66", weight 114 lbs. He served in Papua New Guinea as a sharpshooter before suffering injuries from shrapnel and being hospitalised in Brisbane, then ending his service in the stores and communications sections of the Army.3,8,9
James's second marriage was to Mary Ellen (Nell) Cumming, daughter of George Cumming and Ethel Maud Robinson, on 28 September 1946 at St Stephen's Cathedral in Brisbane, Queensland.10,9,11
Jim and Nell created a successful retail business in about 1946 with stores at Redcliffe and Sandgate - Brisbane newspapers carry many advertisements for 'James N Neal & Co' selling refridgerators, washing machines, radios, furniture and later TVs. The business was reputedly started by Jim with the aid of a £300 loan from an Australian digger Jim had met in either PNG or Brisbane.12,9
He and his wife Mary Ellen arrived in Los Angeles on 24 September 1956, having sailed 1st class on the Sierra, which left Brisbane on the 5 Sep. They gave their destination as 2110 Third St, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.2
He arrived in Sydney on 29 January 1957 on the Monterey and as he was an American citizen, appears in the Alien Register records for this period.13
He and his wife Mary Ellen made many trips outside of Australia for business and pleasure to the USA, UK and New Zealand. Incoming passenger cards show them arriving back in Australia from an 8-day New Zealand trip on 27 October 1966; also arriving from Hawaii on 17 Dec 1967 (after an unstated time) and on 8 Sep 1970 (after 5 mths overseas). Mary Ellen also arrived in from a Singapore trip on 11 Mar 1968. They both described themselves as 'Electrical retailers' and latterly 'Company Directors' with a home address of 1a Warde St, Scarborough.14
James's third marriage was to Shirley Linden Chivers on 9 October 1984 in Brisbane, Queensland.9
James died on 31 October 1991 at St Andrews Hospital in Brisbane, Queensland, at age 81.1,3,9 He was cremated at the Albany Creek Crematorium on 4 November 1991.9

Winifred Florence Neale1
(1913 - 1994)
Winifred Florence Neale was born in Willesden, Middlesex, on 2 March 1913. She was the daughter of Henry Butler Neale (b. 13 Sep 1875, d. 26 Apr 1965) and Grace Amelia Hamshere (b. 20 Jul 1878, d. 17 Nov 1967).2,3,4,5
She was listed in the 1921 census at 44 Thwelly Rd in Wimbledon, Surrey, with her parents and siblings Dorothy Grace (17), Fredereick Edgar (12), and Catherine(10). Their father was a carpenter and builder on his own account.6
She was listed in the 1939 Register at 'Furzewick', Church St in Hungerford, Berkshire; she is listed with her parents Henry (retired builder) and Grace. She was the private secretary to the secretary of an Institute.4
She married William Valentine Forsaith, son of William Smyth Forsaith and Florence Susannah Saunders, in Newbury, Berkshire, on 18 December 1948.1,3
Winifred died on 6 November 1994 in Honiton, Devon, at age 81.7,8

Ralph Needham1
(1801 - 1861)
Ralph Needham was born in Shoreditch, London, Middlesex, on 5 January 1801. And baptised at St Leonards, shoreditch, on 2 Mar 1801, the son of Ralph NEEDHAM and Elisabeth.2
He was listed in the 1841 census in Shoreditch, London, Middlesex; he was a linen draper and the household included two servants and five assistants.3
He was listed in the 1851 census as Head of Family at 105 and 106 High St in Shoreditch, London, Middlesex; he was a widowed linen draper and the household included two servants, an errand boy, and four draper’s assistant’s (one being his nephew).4
Ralph's marriage to Jemima Smyth Mitchell, daughter of Edward Mitchell and Rebecca Osment Smyth, was registered between July 1851 and August 1851 in Hackney, London, Middlesex.1
John Smyth Mitchell, Ralph Needham and Robert Forsaith were appointed executors of Edward Mitchell's estate in London on 3 January 1860.5
He was listed in the 1861 census as Head of Family at Forest Hill in Lewisham, Kent, with his wife Jemima; he was a linen-draper and the household included Jemima's niece Mary Forsaith Mitchell and a servant.6
Ralph died on 2 December 1861 in Forest-Hill, Kent, at age 60.7,8
