Alexander McDougall Smith was born at 28 Factory St in Pollockshaw, Eastwood, Renfrewshire, on 4 September 1904. He was the son of Peter SMITH (colliery engine fitter) & Janet Hunter Holmes McDOUGALL (deceased at time of his marriage).²

He married Christina Marion McInnes Edwards, daughter of Joseph Edwards and Jane Isa McInnes, at 261 Kennedy St in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, on 9 May 1941. At the time of their marriage he was a coal-miner, she a machinist.³

From related family marriage/birth records it is known he worked as a coalminer until 1942; at one time was an Irvine Town Councillor, but by 1944 was a political organiser (possibly the Communist party), which is also stated on his death certificate.¹

Alexander died on 21 October 1952 at The Infirmary in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, at age 48 of chronic nephritis (10 years) and coronary thrombosis.¹

Alfred's marriage to Betty Vivien Haggis, daughter of Laurence Forsaith Haggis and Geraldine Marion Nicoll, was registered between January 1942 and March 1942 in Watford, Hertfordshire.¹

Edward died on 11 June 1987 in South Australia.² He was cremated at the Centennial Park in Pasadena on 13 June 1987.²

Edwin David Smith was born in Ariah Park, New South Wales, on 1 February 1920.¹

He enlisted in the 2/1 Medium Artillery Regiment, Australian Army (#NX16030) on 21 May 1940 at Randwick, New South Wales.¹
He served for only a few months before being hospitilised with a fractured left hand, then joined the 2/13 Army Field Regiment in Nov 1940, followed by the 2/15 Field Regmt (Artillery) in Feb 1941. On 12 Jul 1941 he embarked on HMAT 7 and arrived in New Guinea on the 24th as part of No.1 Independent Company. He was posted as MIA (believed to be a POW) on 22 Aug 1942 and his records state he was 'presumed dead' on 19 Oct 1945. It is not clear when his family would have known the true events surrounding his death.

Edwin died on 1 July 1942 at age 22 in the sinking of the Japanese ship Montevideo Maru, which was torpedoed by the American submarine Sturgeon when carrying Australian POWs from Rabaul to Hainan.² He is commerated at the Rabaul (Bita Paka) War Cemetery.^3,4
