John Richard Pickmere was born in Warrington, Lancashire, on 28 December 1794.3,1 and was baptised on 7 March 1795 at St Elphin's Church in Warrington.4,5,1
He married Eliza Thornhill in Warrington, Lancashire, on 3 March 1823.3,6,1
He lived and worked as a solicitor in Warrington, but retired to Llanfair Carereinion, Montgomeryshire, Wales. He was compiler of the 'Pickmere Pedigree' book and Family Tree, 1832, and is believed to have changed the family name from PICKMORE back to PICKMERE.3
John died on 11 May 1875 in Llanfyllin, Montgomeryshire, at age 80.3,7 He was buried at the Llanfair Caereinion Church yard.8,1

He arrived aboard the Mermaid in 1859, having run away from home and roamed in Canada and Australia before coming to New Zealand. He supposedly also inherited wealth, approx £3,000 from an aunt in England.
He lived at 'Pukepoto' near Ahipara in the 1860's then moved to Mangatete, now called Kaiangaroa, near Kaitaia, and later to Remuera, Auckland.1
He married Serena Hannah Matthews, daughter of Richard Matthews and Johanna Sarah Blomfield, in Awanui, north of Kaitaia, in 1861.4,1,5,6
Ralph died on 13 April 1901 in Remuera, Auckland, at age 74.7,1,8 He was buried in April 1901 at the St Marks Cemetery in Remuera.9,1,10

He was in Britain when WWII broke out but served in Egypt and Libya with the 8 NZ Field Company, including at the Battle of El Alamein. He was awarded the Military Cross on 17 Jun 1943, as a Lieutenant.3,4

In civilian life he was an architect, and designed Greenlane and the National Woman's Hospital, also the AMP Building on the corner of Queen & Victoria Streets, Auckland. This was one of the first high-rise buildings in Auckland.1
