Frank Berry Standish1,2
(1860 - 1944)
Frank Berry Standish was born in Chelsea, London, Middlesex, on 10 March 1860.2,3
He was the son of Mary Elizabeth BERRY and William STANDISH, a Yorkshire born artist who specialised in animal painting - his grandfather John Standish (c.1767-1850) was also an artist. His mother died in 1868 aged 51 years, and in 1880 his father, then aged 65, was sentenced to five years penal servitude for robbery. This seems likely to have been the catalyst for his emigration to New Zealand, as by 1880 Frank Berry Standish was living at "Longbeach" near Ashburton, and the Wakanui Electoral Roll for that year shows his occupation as 'artist'.
In about 1885 he when into partnership in Christchurch with Alfred Ernest PREECE as a photographer.4
He married Eleanora Gordon Cross, daughter of Frederick Cross and Elizabeth Smith, at Holy Trinity Church in Christchurch, Canterbury, on 11 September 1888.1,5
The partnership with Alfred PREECE was dissolved on 17 March 1890 and Frank left Christchurch to live in California, with his wife and daughter following in 1891. By 1900 they were living in San Francisco with Frank employed as a newspaper artist, and by 1910 the family were living in Alameda, California where he was employed as an advertising artist.4
Frank died on 30 August 1944 in Alameda, California, at age 84.3
