Percival Bernard Weston Wicks1

(1886 - 1954)
Father*William Augustus Wicks1 b. 1849, d. 1899
Mother*Sarah Ann Holman1 b. 1851, d. 1931
Percival's birth was registered between October 1886 and December 1886 in Isle of Wight, Hampshire.1
He was listed in the 1891 census, boarding at 96 Gough St in Tower Hamlets, Poplar, London, Middlesex, with his parents, under the Weston surname.2
He was listed in the 1901 census at 49 Campbell Rd in Portsmouth, Hampshire, living with his mother, her mother Caroline and his Uncle Samuel.3 Percy renamed himself to Percy Bernard WESTON (sometimes WICKS WESTON) at some time before the 1911 census (where he is listed as WESTON). He used the WICKS name in England, but WESTON in Scotland, as his father had used WESTON as the family name during their time in Glasgow prior to 1899. His probate record identifies all the variations.4
He was listed as a lodger in Barbara Jane Frost's household in the 1911 Census at 98 Pollock St in Govan, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, under the name of Percival WESTON. He was an engineer fitter, and claimed to be 29 years old, rather than the correct 24. This made him closer in age to his landlady, who he would shortly marry.5

He married Barbara Jane Frost at 102 West Nile St in Blythswood, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, on 29 June 1911. The marriage entry is significant in that Percy claims his surname is WESTON (and therefore his father's surname was WESTON, rather than WICKS). Both parties lied about their age - Percy claiming to be 29 (actually 24) and Barbara also 29 (actually 38!).4

He was appointed administrator of Sarah Ann Holman's estate in London on 24 August 1934.6

Percival died on 13 August 1954 in Elie, Fife.7

He was listed in the 1891 census as Head of Family in Wooburn Green, Wooburn, Buckinghamshire, with his wife Emily; he was still an upholsterer. Their children Harold, Cyril, Percy and William were listed as living with them, as was his widowed mother Sarah.9

He was listed in the 1901 census as Head of Family at Bourne Rd in Bourne End, Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, with his wife Emily; he was still working as an upholsterer. Their children Harold, Cyril, Percy, William, Richard and Dorothy were listed as living with them.6

He was listed in the 1911 census as Head of Family at The Parade in Bourne End, Buckinghamshire, with his wife Emily; he was now a stationer and she was assisting in the business. The census form was filled in by Emily, as she noted her husband had been blind since he was 51. Their children Richard and Dorothy were listed as living with them.1

It is interesting to compare Richard's stated occupation in the census records with his shop-front in the 1920s. Both he and Emily claimed to be upholsterers in 1881 (with a sideline in china). The shop picture from the '20s clearly states 'Stationer' (matching the 1911 census) but there are several signs advertising Lipton's Tea and a curious extra cabinet to the right of the shop displaying chinaware.
