He served in the Gallipoli campaign with the 26th Casualty Clearing Station, from which he was hospitalised at Lemnos on 17 Jul 1915, then sent back to Alexandria in Jan 1916. After discharge he joined the 31st Division and was sent to Marseilles, arriving in Apr 1916. From there he joined the 5th Corps in field work but suffered influenza in Jun 1918 before being returned to England on 1 April 1919 for demob on 5 Feb as an Acting Corporal.⁸
