He was listed in the 1911 census at 43 Elmwood Road West in Croydon, Surrey, in the household of his mother Elizabeth Annie Barnes, and was a clerk in an architect and surveyor's office.6
He enlisted in the Royal Army Medical Corps (although he had been an architect's clerk) for the duration of the war (as Private, #55770) on 16 February 1915.7,8
He served in the Gallipoli campaign with the 26th Casualty Clearing Station, from which he was hospitalised at Lemnos on 17 Jul 1915, then sent back to Alexandria in Jan 1916. After discharge he joined the 31st Division and was sent to Marseilles, arriving in Apr 1916. From there he joined the 5th Corps in field work but suffered influenza in Jun 1918 before being returned to England on 1 April 1919 for demob on 5 Feb as an Acting Corporal.8
He was listed as a visitor to Phyllis Agnes Pennock's household in the 1921 Census at 16 Essex Rd in Enfield, Middlesex; he was working as an architect and surveyor's assistant.9
He married Phyllis Agnes Pennock in Edmonton, Middlesex, on 3 August 1922.1,10

In 1905 he joined Globe Timber Mills in Broken Hill as yard manager until 1921, when he moved to Clare. Here he entered into partnership with with Mr. G.T. Harder in the furniture business, which he later purchased and turned into a sawmill, timber, joinery and furniture business.
He was secretary of the Clare Masonic Lodge for some years, a Clare Corporation councillor and committee member of the Clare Racing Club.2
