Hugh was born in Auburn, Clare, South Australia, on 8 May 1864, son of Hugh Hannan McKIRDY and Caroline STAPLEY.1

He married Margaret Fleming, daughter of Christopher Fleming and Martha Forsaith, at the residence of Mrs Fleming in Nth Adelaide, South Australia, on 3 June 1901.2

Hugh died on 11 December 1933 in Richmond, Adelaide, South Australia, at age 69.3

James McLean1

James McLean was born in Mearns, Renfrewshire, in 1856.1,2

He married Janet Arbuckle at 60 King St in Pollockshaw, Eastwood, Renfrewshire, on 27 August 1875. He was a boilermaker, she a power-loom weaver and both claimed to be 19.3,4

He was widowed on the death of his wife Janet in 1878.5

James's second marriage was to Jessie McInnes, daughter of Angus McInnes and Christina (Cirsty) McFadyen, on 14 January 1881 at 145 Holm St in Blythswood, Glasgow, Lanarkshire. He was an engine-keeper, a widower and she was a bathmaid, both working at the Hydropathic Baths in Row; she claimed to be only 24, but must have been at least 27.1

He was listed in the 1881 census as a boarder at the Hydropathic Porter Lodge in Shandon, Dunbartonshire, with his wife Jessie; the Hydropathic Baths there were formerly West Shandon House, built for Robert Napier in the 1840s and converted to baths in 1880 after his death.6

He was listed in the 1891 census as Head of Family at 83 Belville St in Greenock, Renfrewshire, with his wife Jessie; he was now a ship caulker. Jessie's sons Angus and Donald, having now taken the McLEAN name, were also in the household, as was James's son John by his first marriage and their own children James, Christina, Margaret and Charles. The house had two rooms with windows and both Jessie and Angus claimed to be fluent in Gaelic and English.7

He was listed in the 1901 census as Head of Family at 29 Rue End St in Greenock, Renfrewshire, with his wife Jessie; he was now a boilermaker and this house had four rooms with windows. Their children James, Christina, Margaret, Charles and Martin were listed as living with them.8

He was listed in the 1911 census as Head of Family at 63 Rue End St in Greenock, Renfrewshire, with his wife Jessie; he was now a boilermaker. Their children Margaret, Charles and Martin were listed as living with them.9

He was listed in the 1921 census as Head of Family at 63 Rue End St in Greenock, Renfrewshire, with his wife Jessie; he was an iron caulker at Scott Ltd's shipyard. Their children John and Martin were listed as living with them, as were two boarders.10

James died on 13 December 1928 at 4 Chapel St in Greenock, Renfrewshire.11
