On enlistment he was described as 5' and 3/4", brown hair, hazel eyes with a scar on his chin, eventually grwoing to be 5' 6". His conduct was generally described as 'good' or better and his gunnery engagements ran from July 1879 to July 1885.3
He was listed in the 1881 census at 'sea or in a foreign port' as an Able Seaman on HMS Superb.2
He married Sarah Ann Murphy at the Registry Office in Portsea Island, Hampshire, on 24 June 1886. He gave his occupation as 'Ships Corporal, RN.7,8'
He was listed in the 1891 census at Portsmouth dockyard in Portsmouth, Hampshire, as a Ship's Corporal 1st class, on board HMS Thunder.9
