Karel Marthyn (Carl Martin) de Blonk was born in Rock Valley, Sioux Co., Iowa, on 17 October 1909.1
Carl was a carpenter by trade, the first born in the US to his Dutch parents (all his older siblings being born in Holland).2
He served with the US Forces in the Pacific during WWII, and spent some period of leave in Brisbane in 1942, at which time he met his future wife, even promising to return one day to marry her.3
Brisbane newspapers were full of stories of how Carl arrivied in Brisbane on 3 March 1950 with the intent of finding the girl he'd met 8 years before and proposing to her. Nancy was unfortunately in hospital at the time and unable to greet him.3,4
He married Nancy Cumming, daughter of George Cumming and Ethel Maud Robinson, at St Stephen's Cathedral in Brisbane, Queensland, on 2 September 1950.
Karel died on 25 April 2004 in Brisbane, Queensland, at age 94.5,6 He was buried on 29 April 2004 at the Pinnaroo Cemetery, Bridgeman Downs.7
