Richard James Cumming was born in Miltownpass, Co. Westmeath, circa 1860.2
His Dublin Metropolitan Police service record shows him enlisting on 30 January 1880, aged 20, a labourer from Edenderry, Westmeath, Protestant, height 5' 9 1/2". He was promoted from '4th rate' to '3rd rate' in June 1881, but was 'dismissed, no pay' on 12 Sep 1882.3
He appears to have emigrated circa 1883 from Ireland.4
He married Mary Ann Flood, daughter of George Flood and Ellen Dougherty, at the Minister's residence (Presbyterian), Arthur St in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane, Queensland, on 28 October 1885.5,6,1

William Richard Cumming CVO was born in Forest Hill, Queensland, on 15 October 1911.1,2
He graduated with a BA from the Brisbane, Queensland, on 13 April 1934.3
He lived at the Hotel Kurrajong in Canberra, ACT, in 1935, listed as 'public servant.4'
He married Evelyn Joyce Paul, daughter of George Paul and Evelyn Jessie Mitchell, at St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney, New South Wales, on 26 August 1939.5
He graduated with an LLB from the University of Sydney on 6 June 1942.3
He signed the register at Ralph Dunstan Paul and Esther Clara Smith's wedding at St Paul's Church in Chatswood, Sydney, New South Wales, on 10 March 1945.6
He graduated with a Diploma of Public Administration from the University of Sydney in New South Wales on 19 June 1948.3
He served as Lt AMF (1938), Capt AIF (1942), Major (1943) and AAPC to the Reserve (1946).

During his overseas postings he was Counsellor (Cultural Affairs) at the Australian High Commission, London (1973-4), Acting Deputy High Commissioner and Official Secretary, London (1960-66 and 1970-73), and appointed Extra Gentleman Usher to the Queen (1962-66 and 1971-74).
Other positions held include Member of the Council of the National Library of Australia (1967-70), Council of the Institute of Aboriginal Studies (1968-70), Secretary, Advisory Board of Assistance to Australian Composers (1966-70), Interim Council of the Australian National Gallery (1967-70), Member Australia Society of London, Chairman Public Lending Rights Committee, Australia Council from 1976, and member of the University Club (Syd) and Oriental (London).3
William died on 17 August 1984 at Neringah Hospital, Wahroonga in Sydney, New South Wales, at age 72 of carcinoma of the prostate (4 years). The informant was his widow Evelyn, who was also present.7 He was cremated at the Northern Suburbs Crematorium in Nth Ryde on 20 August 1984.7,8 His ashes were placed at niche 404 PT at the Northern Suburbs Crematorium.7,8

Kenneth Vivian Cunliffe1

Kenneth Vivian Cunliffe was born in Transvaal circa 1892.
From 1910 to 1913 he was employed by Village Deep Gold Mining Co., Ltd., Johannesburg, as assistant sampler and later assistant surveyor. In 1913 he joined Randfontein Central Gold Mining as assistant surveyor.
He was mobilized for service in the Imperial Light Horse in 1914 but was taken prisoner in German South West Africa, released in 1915, after which he returned to Randfontein Central but then joined the 4th South African Horse in German East Africa until Dec 1916. He was invalided out in 1917, resumed his work as surveyor for a few months, then held a temporary commission in the army. He received a commission in the Royal Engineers early in 1918 after training in England, and was drafted to India later that year, seeing active service on the North West Frontier from Jul-Oct 1919.2
He married Margaret Anson Coldstream, daughter of William Menzies Coldstream and Adele Margaret Edith Stevens, at St Mark's in Bangalore, Madras, on 15 November 1919. He was a Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers at the time of his marriage.1
After his marriage and demob he rejoined Randfontein Central as chief surveyor until 1923. He was then appointed mine overseer, Government Gold Mining Areas from 1923-33. After a brief period as mine overseer at Witwatersrand Gold Mining Co Ltd he then rejoined Randfontein Estates as sectional manager for seven years.
From 1940 to 1943 he was on active service and held the rank of major in the South African Engineer Corps. He returned to Randfontein in 1943 as sectional manager, but in 1945 took the position of assistant mining engineer at African Associated Mines, Bulawayo. He acted as mine manager at Monarch Mine, Francistown, then in 1946 became manager of Bushtick Mines Ltd. He returned to African Associated Mines in Bulawayo in 1952.2
Kenneth died on 10 September 1952 in Essexvale.2
