James Richard (Dick) Cumming was born in Bulimba, Brisbane, Queensland, on 23 February 1924. Only at the time of obtaining his birth certificate in preparation for his marriage did he discover he had been registered as 'James Richard' - up until then he had always assumed he was 'Richard James', and had recorded himself in official documents as such. Thus his Army records state he is 'Richard James' and also (curiously) give a birth year of 1923.^1,2

He enlisted in the Australian Army (service no. QX58212 & Q129546) on 18 September 1943 at Queensland.²

He married Gloria May Taylor in Brisbane, Queensland, on 7 December 1946.

He was widowed at age 64 on the death of his wife Gloria on 21 August 1988.

James died on 20 February 2021 at Sunshine Coast University Hospital in Birtinya, Queensland, at age 96.³ He was buried on 25 February 2021 at the Buderim Cemetery, 405 Mooloolaba Rd in Buderim.³

Janet Ferguson Cumming was born in Meadowhead, Liberton, Edinburgh, on 28 February 1906.¹

Janet died in 1989 in Dalkeith, Midlothian.²

He had a brief liaison with Jane (Jean) Fergusson, daughter of John Fergusson and Christy McGregor, in 1871 at Perthshire which resulted in the birth of their son Ewen.¹

Mary Ellen (Nell) Cumming was born in Queensland on 6 June 1919.¹

She married James Nelson Neal at St Stephen's Cathedral in Brisbane, Queensland, on 28 September 1946.^2,3,4

Jim and Nell created a successful retail business in about 1946 with stores at Redcliffe and Sandgate - Brisbane newspapers carry many advertisements for 'James N Neal & Co' selling refridgerators, washing machines, radios, furniture and later TVs. The business was reputedly started by Jim with the aid of a £300 loan from an Australian digger Jim had met in either PNG or Brisbane.^5,3

She and her husband James arrived in Los Angeles on 24 September 1956, having sailed 1st class on the Sierra, which left Brisbane on the 5 Sep. They gave their destination as 2110 Third St, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.⁶

She and her husband James made many trips outside of Australia for business and pleasure to the USA, UK and New Zealand. Incoming passenger cards show them arriving back in Australia from an 8-day New Zealand trip on 27 October 1966; also arriving from Hawaii on 17 Dec 1967 (after an unstated time) and on 8 Sep 1970 (after 5 mths overseas). Mary Ellen also arrived in from a Singapore trip on 11 Mar 1968. They both described themselves as 'Electrical retailers' and latterly 'Company Directors' with a home address of 1a Warde St, Scarborough.⁷

Mary Ellen died on 18 July 2007 in Gold Coast, Queensland, at age 88. She was cremated on 19 July 2007.

Maureen Dulcie Cumming was born in Queensland on 30 January 1915.¹

They lived in Elimbah, Queensland, in 1936, with George listed as a station master, Dulcie a dressmaker, and Ronald a labourer.²

She married Allan David Villiers Stewart, son of Allan Stewart and Jane Bain, in Brisbane, Queensland, on 8 November 1941.^3,4

Maureen died on 21 April 1998 at St Andrews Hospital in Brisbane, Queensland, at age 83. She was buried on 23 April 1998 at the Nudgee Cemetery, 572 Earnshaw Rd.⁵
