Susan A Hornsby

(c 1884 - )
Susan A Hornsby was born in New Jersey circa 1884.1

She married Gordon Ashwell Baldwin, son of Thomas Pitts Baldwin and Frances (Fannie) Moodie, in USA circa 1906.1,2

She was listed in the 1910 US census at 218 State St in Perth Amboy, Middlesex, New Jersey, with her husband Gordon; he was a shipping clerk in a brick factory, and the household included his brother George and a servant. Their child Francis was listed as living with them.2

She was listed in the 1920 US census at 173 Water St in Perth Amboy, Middlesex, New Jersey, with her husband Gordon; he was a foreman in a factory. Note that he has not aged as fast as his wife (as he claimed to be 38, but should be 39-40) and was confused about his mother's birthplace, which he claimed to be Scotland (actually his grand-mother's birth country). Their child Sewell was listed as living with them.3

She was listed in the 1930 US census at 7th St in Raritan, Middlesex, New Jersey, with her husband Gordon; he was a book-keeper for a public utility, living in their own house of $8000 value, with a radio. He has again lied about his age (claimed to be 48, should be 50); has moved his birthplace to Virginia and is still confused about his mother's birthplace. Their children Sewell and John were listed as living with them.1

Maria Horton1

(bt 1839 - 1841 - 1919)
Maria Horton was probably born in Ennis, Co. Clare, between 1839 and 1841. Both her age and place of birth wandered significantly in the census entries as she claimed to be born in either Durham or Co. Clare, Ireland around 1835-1841. Based on her entry in the 1861 census, she probably was born in Ireland and had her first servant's job in Durham. Most likely birth years would seem to be 1839-41.2
She was listed in the 1861 census at 13 Crowther Tce in Sunderland, Durham, where she was a housemaid in the employ of a widower (George Elliot) operating a painting business. This census entry is possibly her only truthful one - she claims to be 20 and born in Ireland, which she also claims as her birthplace in the 1881, 1891 and 1911 entries. In 1871 and 1901 she claims a birthplace of Durham.3

She was listed in the 1871 census in Camperdown, Killingworth, Northumberland, with her husband Ralph; he was a coal miner. Their child Margaret was listed as living with them.4

Maria's marriage to Ralph Stobbs, son of Cuthbert Stobbs and Ann Bruce, was registered between January 1877 and March 1877 in Newcastle-on-Tyne, Northumberland.1

She was listed in the 1881 census in Hazlerigg, Long Benton, Northumberland, with her husband Ralph; he was still working as a coal miner. Their children Margaret and Ralph were listed as living with them.5

She was listed in the 1891 census at Hood House in Hazlerigg, Long Benton, Northumberland, with her husband Ralph; he was no longer working, but 'living on means'. Their child Ralph was listed as living with them.6

She was widowed on the death of her husband Ralph before 1901.
She was listed in the 1901 census at 5 Chapel Row in Long Benton, Killingworth, Northumberland, as the widowed servant of one Thomas Cresswell, an underground miner.7

She was listed in the 1911 census at Nixon's Buildings in Dudley, Weetslade, Northumberland; she was living alone in a 2-roomed house and states she had 5 children of which only 2 are living.2

Maria's death was registered between April 1919 and June 1919 in Tynemouth, Northumberland.8
