Henry Aitken Wyse1

(1835 - 1922)
Henry Aitken WYSE (1835-1922)
Henry Aitken Wyse was born in St Cuthberts, Midlothian, on 28 December 1835. He was the son of George WYSE and Helen DOVE, with the initial birth/baptism entry only in the name of Henry. A subsequent addition states "Note-by declaration before one of Her Majesty’s Justices of the Peace for the County of Ayr dated 28th May 1851 the said George Wyse declared that in the recording of the birth of his son his other Christian name ‘Aitken’ which he received at his baptism had been omitted to be entered and requests that ‘Aitken’ be added to that of Henry thus making his name ‘Henry Aitken’ which is his proper name”.
This unusual addition appears to have been prompted by George's relationship with his childless half-brother Alexander, of Ayr, whose mother was Rabina AITKEN. Alexander's original will (of 18 Nov 1835, shortly before Henry's birth) left most of his estate to his half-brother George, with detailed provisions, including requiring George to move to Ayr. In a Codicil to the will dated 24 Jan 1839, Alexander stated “my brother George has a son named Henry Aitken” - so the change to Henry's record appears to have been to align with Alexander's wishes, or to simplify the probate. None of George and Helen's other children had two Christian names.1

He worked in a newspaper office in Ayr before joining the civil service in Glasgow, but shortly after sailed with his mother Helen on the Giants Causeway out of Greenock on 7 Sep 1858 for Australia, arriving on 12 January 1859 in Melbourne. He there worked for the printing and directory business of Sands and McDougal.2,3

He left Melbourne for Dunedin in May 1863 on the Aldinga 1, as part of the expansion of the Sands and McDougal business into New Zealand.4,3

An Otago Daily Times advertisement of 9 July 1863 announced his opening of a stationer's premises on Princes St 'in connection with the well-known firm of Sands and McDougall', but he also offered services for printing and account-book manufacture.

By Oct 1864 he was advertising for entries for his 'Dunedin Directory' to be published in Jan 1865, and the Sands and McDougal connection had been dropped. This was the start of the Wise's Directories business - in 1872 he published the first issue of what is loosely known as Wise's New Zealand Post Office directory; this was not an official publication of the Post Office, but the term was sanctioned in 1881 provided he supplied a free copy to every Post Office in NZ. Publication continued for 100 years.

In the 1880s Wise expanded back cross the Tasman, founding the Victoria Post Office directory (1884–1916), the New South Wales Post Office directory (1886–1950), Wise's Queensland official directory (1890–1949), the Tasmanian Post Office directory (1890–1948), the South Australia Post Office directory (1895–1906) and the Western Australia Post Office directory (1895–1949).

The output was not confined to directories, as his interests saw the publication of many specially commissioned maps, guidebooks and even a set of 15 reproductions of watercolours by John Gully (1877).5,6,3

He married Elizabeth Isabella Walker in New Zealand in 1864.7

He was widowed at age 75 on the death of his wife Elizabeth on 22 February 1911.8,9

Henry died on 16 June 1922 in Dunedin, Otago, at age 86.10,11 He was buried on 18 June 1922 at the Anderson's Bay Cemetery.12
