Thomas Forsaith Macdonald, Herbert Alexander Macdonald and Arnold Morell (Dick) Macdonald were appointed executors of Thomas Morell Macdonald's estate in Invercargill on 30 April 1909.10
As described in a publication of the New Zealand Centre for Photography' (now defunct) "He was one of New Zealand's first indigenous Pictorialist photographers, being an active camera club member from 1901. By 1919 he had acquired considerable photographic skills and was sending work to London, Paris and Los Angeles. His participation in the Southland camera clubs along with Wm. J. Ferguson saw them dominate interclub competition in the early 1920s, with Macdonald personally achieving champion print three years in succession. A fine exponent of soft edged compositions, he was proficient in a number of techniques including bromoil, an oil-pigment/water-resist method beloved of the Pictorialists".
Several New Zealand galleries have small collections of his work which can be viewed online (for a set of samples gathered from the Auckland Art Gallery, Te Papa and family sources, see 'A Pictorialist in the Family').11
Arnold died on 27 March 1937 at 31 Taieri Rd in Roslyn, Dunedin, Otago, at age 63 of a syncope from over-exertion.12,13 He was buried on 29 March 1937 at the Invercargill Eastern Cemetery in Invercargill.12,14

Berys Hunter Macdonald
(1911 - 1988)
Father* | Arnold Morell (Dick) Macdonald b. 1873, d. 1937 |
Mother* | Ella Mary Morris b. 1875, d. 1973 |
Berys Hunter Macdonald was born in Invercargill, Southland, on 19 April 1911.1 She was also known in the family as Tigger, as all the family carried nicknames from the Winnie-the-Pooh books.2
She was a bridesmaid at Ivall Moira (Mollie) Hansen and Morris Morell Macdonald's wedding at St Marks Church in Opawa, Christchurch, Canterbury, on 20 October 1934.3,4
She had a lifetime affinity with all things mechanical (and later electrical) having been refused a Meccano set for her birthday as 'girls didn't play with things like that'. As a result she had to make do with borrowing her elder brother's sets. In later life you could always rely on the contents of her handbag including a small set of screwdrivers, which 'might come in handy' and frequently did.
She followed her father's great interest in cars, but was not allowed to buy her first one (an Austin 7) until she had proven she could change the wheel of the family Dodge - a lot bigger and heavier job than the Austin!
She worked in the offices of Allan Ford, architect, as architectural draughtsman in Invercargill until April 1938, when she moved to Wellington and worked for Anscombe's for 8 months before joining the Wellington City Corporation, in both cases in architectural design and drafting work, although she never received any formal training.2
She married Alexander Ferguson, son of Alexander Ferguson and Catherine Sinclair (Kate) McInnes, at St Luke's Presbyterian Church in Remuera, Auckland, on 13 October 1941. They were attended by Johnnie Crisp and Susan SamuelL and the reception was held at the Auckland Domain Tearooms.5,6,7
Berys died on 6 February 1988 at 185 The Ridgeway in Stoke, Nelson, at age 76 of cancer.8,2,9,10 She was cremated at the Wakapuaka Crematorium on 8 February 1988.2 Her ashes were scattered in the garden of her home at 185 The Ridgeway.2
