John Ferguson was born in Greenock, Renfrewshire, on 31 March 1838.2,3 and was baptised on 27 April 1838 in Greenock.2
The siblings Jessie, John, Robina and Mary were listed in the 1851 census in Gorbals, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, with their mother Janet (Jessie) Haggart.4
He married Margaret Moodie, daughter of George Moodie and Janet Hutton, at Free Church, 6 Eginton Terrace in Ayr, Ayrshire, on 21 September 1869. He was a 2nd Officer in the Merchant Marine.5
He joined the Cunard Steamship Co. in 1867 as a 2nd Officer and after he obtained his Captain's certificate (C13386) in Glasgow in 1872 was appointed to command in Cunard in May 1882.
During this time he served in the Balbec, Kelar, Trinidad, Aleppo, Gallia, Scythia, British Queen, Servia, Aurania and Etruria (his last command).6,7
He was listed in the 1891 census as Head of Family at 15 Norma Rd, Great Crosby in Waterloo, Lancashire, with his wife Margaret; he was a Master Mariner. Their children Jessie, George, John, Maggie and Mary were listed as living with them, as were Margaret's mother Janet Hutton and sister Mary Nicoll Moodie.8
John died on 9 August 1900 in Waterloo, Liverpool, Lancashire, at age 62.9,10 He was buried on 13 August 1900 at the Anfield Cemetery in Liverpool.11
His will was probated in Liverpool, Lancashire, on 2 November 1900 with Margaret Moodie appointed executrix of effects valued at £607/1/8.9

Mary Ferguson was born at 2 Malvern Place in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, on 18 July 1888.2,1
The siblings Alexander, Jane, Robert and Mary were listed in the 1891 census at 37 Wesleyan St in Camlachie, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, with their parents, James (Jimmie) Ferguson and Mary Duncan Adam.3

The siblings Alexander, Mary and Robert were listed in the 1911 census at 1052 Dumbarton Rd in Partick, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, with their parents, James (Jimmie) Ferguson and Mary Duncan Adam. Mary was a telephone operator.4
She married James Ferguson at Prince of Wales Hall, Sauchiehall St in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, on 23 August 1912. Despite the matching surname, they were totally unrelated.5
She was a Post Office clerk at the time of her marriage.
She was listed in the 1921 census at 3 Narval Place in Kilmacolm, Renfrewshire, with her husband James; he was a time-keeper for Lithgows Ltd, shipbuilders. Their children James, Irene and Carolyn were listed as living with them.6
The family were booked on the Letitia, which left Glasgow for New York on 12 February 1927 but appear never to have made the trip, as their names were crossed off the passenger manifest.7
She had a defacto relationship with James Durkin from circa 1927 as by the time of her daughter Carolyn's marriage, she was using the name Edmonds (which he had also changed to use), as was her other daughter Irene.
Mary died on 4 March 1976 at Gartnavel General Hospital in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, at age 87 of heart disease and cerebral degeneration.8
