John Ferguson was born in Greenock, Renfrewshire, on 31 March 1838.^2,3 and was baptised on 27 April 1838 in Greenock.²
The siblings Jessie, John, Robina and Mary were listed in the 1851 census in Gorbals, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, with their mother Janet (Jessie) Haggart.⁴

He married Margaret Moodie, daughter of George Moodie and Janet Hutton, at Free Church, 6 Eginton Terrace in Ayr, Ayrshire, on 21 September 1869. He was a 2nd Officer in the Merchant Marine.⁵

He joined the Cunard Steamship Co. in 1867 as a 2nd Officer and after he obtained his Captain's certificate (C13386) in Glasgow in 1872 was appointed to command in Cunard in May 1882.

During this time he served in the Balbec, Kelar, Trinidad, Aleppo, Gallia, Scythia, British Queen, Servia, Aurania and Etruria (his last command).^6,7

He was listed in the 1891 census as Head of Family at 15 Norma Rd, Great Crosby in Waterloo, Lancashire, with his wife Margaret; he was a Master Mariner. Their children Jessie, George, John, Maggie and Mary were listed as living with them, as were Margaret's mother Janet Hutton and sister Mary Nicoll Moodie.⁸

John died on 9 August 1900 in Waterloo, Liverpool, Lancashire, at age 62.^9,10 He was buried on 13 August 1900 at the Anfield Cemetery in Liverpool.¹¹

His will was probated in Liverpool, Lancashire, on 2 November 1900 with Margaret Moodie appointed executrix of effects valued at £607/1/8.⁹

Their child Jean was listed as living with them, as were Jack's sisters Maggie Amelia Ferguson and Mary Moodie (May) Ferguson.⁶

John (Jack) Ferguson and Jessie Ferguson were appointed executors of Margaret Moodie's estate in Liverpool, Lancashire, on 21 August 1911.⁷

He was appointed executor of Mary Nicoll Moodie's estate in London on 23 December 1916.⁸

He was listed in the 1921 census as Head of Family at 'Glenrova', Warren Rd in Great Crosby, Liverpool, Lancashire, with his wife Elizabeth; he was an underwriter for Union Marine Insurance, which appears to be part of the Phoenix Assurance Co. Their children John and Sheila were listed as living with them, as was John's sister Mary Moodie (May) Ferguson, his nephew Gordon Alexander Elliott Burrows and the household included a cook and two servants.⁹

He made many trips to the USA in his capacity as a marine underwriter, usually at least one per year. On this last trip he left Southampton on 8 November 1924 on the Aquitania, arriving in New York on the 14 Nov.^10,11

John died on 28 December 1924 in Jersey City, New Jersey.¹²

His will was probated in Liverpool on 25 February 1925 with an estate of £11836/1/1.¹²

She was listed in the 1921 census, visiting the household of Elijah Thomas Memorial Home (The Grange) in Barnstaple, Devon, as part of a gathering of Baptist and Presbyterian ministers and their partners. Two of their children were separately recorded at their home address.⁶

She was widowed at age 68 on the death of her husband Edwin on 19 October 1949.⁷

She was a beneficiary on the probate of Edwin Augustus Elliott Burrows's will in London on 22 February 1950.^7,8

Maggie died in 1978 in Belfast.

Margaret Buchanan Ferguson was born in Scotland.

She married John Cuthbertson in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, on 3 June 1834.¹

She was a Post Office clerk at the time of her marriage.

She was listed in the 1921 census at 3 Narval Place in Kilmacolm, Renfrewshire, with her husband James; he was a time-keeper for Lithgows Ltd, shipbuilders. Their children James, Irene and Carolyn were listed as living with them.⁶

The family were booked on the Letitia, which left Glasgow for New York on 12 February 1927 but appear never to have made the trip, as their names were crossed off the passenger manifest.⁷

She had a defacto relationship with James Durkin from circa 1927 as by the time of her daughter Carolyn's marriage, she was using the name Edmonds (which he had also changed to use), as was her other daughter Irene.

Mary died on 4 March 1976 at Gartnavel General Hospital in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, at age 87 of heart disease and cerebral degeneration.⁸
