James Ferguson was born in Scotland circa 1883. (calculated birth year). He was the son of James Ferguson (letter press printer) and Mary Thomson.

He was an auctioneer's clerk at the time of his marriage but by the 1920's he was a timekeeper in a shipyard.1

He married Mary Ferguson, daughter of James (Jimmie) Ferguson and Mary Duncan Adam, at Prince of Wales Hall, Sauchiehall St in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, on 23 August 1912. Despite the matching surname, they were totally unrelated.1

He was listed in the 1921 census as Head of Family at 3 Narval Place in Kilmacolm, Renfrewshire, with his wife Mary; he was a time-keeper for Lithgows Ltd, shipbuilders. Their children James, Irene and Carolyn were listed as living with them.2

The family were booked on the Letitia, which left Glasgow for New York on 12 February 1927 but appear never to have made the trip, as their names were crossed off the passenger manifest.3

The siblings James and Jane were listed in the 1901 census at 2 Kennyhill Gardens in Dennistoun, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, with their parents, Angus Ferguson and Agnes Ross Dickson.4

It is unclear exactly when he emigrated to Canada, but he worked as a clerk for the Canadian Pacific Railway for three years before enlisting in 1915 and was active in hockey, baseball and swimming, as well as serving with the 100th Winnipeg Grenadiers militia.3,5

He enlisted in the 78th Battalion of the Manitoba Regiment, #147836 on 15 July 1915 and due to being an excellent shot, had been selected as a sniper, but at the time of his death was a signaller with the headquarters staff.6,3,5
The siblings James, Jane, John and Elizabeth were listed in the 1916 Canadian census at 424 Anderson Ave in Winnipeg North, Manitoba, in the household of their parents, Angus Ferguson and Agnes Ross Dickson. James was working as a clerk in the Railways.7

James died on 26 November 1916 in Pas de Calais at age 21 and is commerated at the Vimy Memorial overlooking the Douai Plain from the highest point of Vimy Ridge, north of Arras. The Vimy Memorial is Canada’s largest overseas National Memorial and commemorates more than 11,000 men of the Canadian Expeditionary Force killed during the First World War in France and who have no known grave.6
