Richard and Peter arrived in Southampton on 11 July 1931 on the Corinthic, having left Auckland on 2 Jun 1931 (under the name of Giffard-Burgess) with Stanley and Jean.^2,3
He served in the Royal Navy, having signed on for 12 years on 9 Jul 1946, but transferred to the Royal Australian Navy in Nov 1949, where he served until Dec 1961.¹

He left Tilbury docks on 17 November 1949 on the Port Hobart for Australia, previous address given as HMS Vernon, occupation 'naval rating.⁴'
