James McInnes
(1854 - 1931)
Father* | Angus McInnes b. c 1815, d. 1894 |
Mother* | Christina (Cirsty) McFadyen b. c 1814, d. 1894 |
James McInnes was born in Tobermory, Argyllshire, possibly on 14 April 1854. There is some confusion on James' birth year, and it is probable that it was actually 1853.1,2
The siblings Charles, James and Jessie were listed in the 1861 census in Tobermory, Argyllshire, with their parents, Angus McInnes and Christina (Cirsty) McFadyen.3
The siblings James and Jessie were listed in the 1871 census at Churchyard St in Tobermory, Argyllshire, with their parents, Angus McInnes and Christina (Cirsty) McFadyen. James was a joiner.4
He married Mary McLeod at 56 Jane St (Free Church) in Blythswood, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, on 13 November 1874. He was a journeyman joiner, she a domestic servant.5
He was listed as the brother of Charles McInnes in the 1881 Census at 175 Holm St in Barony, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, and was a joiner.1
He was listed in the 1891 census as Head of Family at 113 Wellfield St in Barony, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, with his wife Mary; he was a joiner. Their children Christina, John, Ann, Angus, Margaret and Catherine were listed as living with them.6
He was the informant of Margaret Wallace Wingate McInnes's death at 6 Janefield Ave in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, on 10 August 1899.7
He was listed in the 1901 census as Head of Family at 6 Janefield Ave in Springburn, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, with his wife Mary; he was a joiner, the whole family were fluent in English and Gaelic, and the house had 3 rooms with windows. Their children Ann, Angus, Catherine and Robert were listed as living with them.8
He was listed in the 1911 census as Head of Family at 95 Campsie St in Springburn, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, with his wife Mary; he was a joiner in a locomotive works, the family were fluent in English and Gaelic, and the house had 3 rooms with windows. Their children Angus, Catherine and Robert were listed as living with them.9
James left Glasgow on 11 July 1914, on board the 'Corsican', bound for Quebec.. He gave his occupation as joiner and was going to Canada to join his son (by then an electrician).10
He was listed in the 1921 census as Head of Family at 136 York St in Westen, Ontario, with his wife Mary; he was working as a carpenter. They were living in semi-detached brick house (owned) with 5 rooms. It is notable that the whole family has taken 5-10 years off their age, for unknown reasons. Their children Catherine and Angus were listed as living with them.11
James died on 27 March 1931 at 25 Little Ave in Weston, York, Ontario, at age 76 of heart failure following several slight strokes. The informant was his son Angus.12 He was buried on 30 March 1931 at the Riverside Cemetery in Weston.12

James (Hamish) McInnes1
(1894 - 1916)
Father* | Charles McInnes1 b. 1848, d. 1918 |
Mother* | Margaret McColl1 b. 1852, d. 1909 |
James (Hamish) McInnes was born at 54 Williams St in Anderston, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, on 5 June 1894.1
The siblings Jane, Christina, Catherine, Jessie, Margaret, Marion, Angus, Dugald, John and James were listed in the 1901 census at 54 William St in Anderston, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, with their parents, Charles McInnes and Margaret McColl.2
The siblings Christina, Catherine, Marion, Dugald, John and James were listed in the 1911 census at 848 Argyle St in Anderston, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, with their father Charles McInnes. Hamish was an insurance clerk.3
He enlisted in the 11th Battalion, Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment) (#16780) on 4 January 1915 at Glasgow, Lanarkshire. Family oral history states he enlisted while under-age as he was given a white feather in the street (due to his large frame), but in fact he was of an age - possibly the white feather story is still true though; he was working as a tram conductor when he enlisted, which was a protected occupation.4,5,6 He was wounded on 25 September 1915 at France and after recovery in the UK, returned to France 2 Feb 1916, rejoining his battalion on the 17th.4,5
James died on 1 July 1916 at Casualty Clearing Station #39 in St Ouen, Somme, at age 22 after the family had been advised by telegram on 1 July that he was 'dangerously ill, with cerebral spinal meningitis' (possibly from an infected head wound). Despite the family attempts to get his brother-in-law Alexander Ferguson (then a Sergeant with the 15th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry) to visit him, he died prior to permission being given - if indeed it would have been allowed.7,4,5 He was buried at the St Ouen Communal Cemetery in St Ouen.8
